Product Description
Great Political Thinkers contains introductions to four of the most influential political theorists in the Western tradition.Written by experts in the fields of history, philosophy, and political science, these concise yet authoritative essays examine the thought and works of Machiaveilli, whose name lives on today as a byword for duplicity; Hobbes, the first great English philosopher; Mill, a liberal thinker and champion of individual liberty; and Marx, whose theories have exerted the single most profound effect on twentieth century politics.Small masterpieces of compression and readability, these studies offer readers important insights into past masters whose ideas still affect the way we think today. ... Product Description
A compelling and revolutionary work that calls for the immediate extension of our human rights to the great apes.

The Great Ape Project looks forward to a new stage in the development of the community of equals, whereby the great apes-chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans-will actually receive many of the same protections and rights that are already accorded to humans.

This profound collection of thirty-one essays by the world's most distinguished observers of free-living apes make up a uniquely satisfying whole, blending observation and interpretation in a highly persuasive case for a complete reassessment of the moral status of our closest kin.

2-0 out of 5 stars A monkey-wrenched book
The Great Ape Project (GAP) is an organization demanding that human rights be extended to the great apes, i.e. chimpanzees, gorillas, orang-utans and bonobos. Or, as GAP puts it, the non-human great apes. Most of the people involved in GAP seem to be animal rights activists, whose ultimate goal is to end all human use of (non-human) animals. Somebody might argue that GAP is therefore a clever, tactical move to mainstream the animal liberation movement. Since the great apes are very similar to ourselves, very few, and usually not turned into steak, extending human rights to them might be relatively easy. At the same time, this would presumably call into question *all* species barriers between ourselves and the animal kingdom (the rest of it).

The book "The Great Ape Project. Equality Beyond Humanity" was published in 1993. It contains contributions from luminaries such as Peter Singer, Tom Regan, Richard Dawkins, Jared Diamond, Jane Goodall and Colin McGinn. (Frans de Waal is notably absent, however.) Some theologians have been invited as well, including the curious Stephen R.L. Clark whose personal philosophy attempts to combine Plato, Aristotle, nominalism, Darwin and God!

Now, such a collection simply cannot be boring, can it?

Unfortunately, it can...

The contributions are too short to be really interesting, and I suspect many were written during a coffee break in between two college lectures. "Oh, that reminds me. I have to write something for that darn anthology". Publish or perish? Frankly, the book is a major disappointment. It's also unclear who the intended readership is. It's obviously not the general public, or decision-making politicians. Other philosophy professors, perhaps?

Frankly, the book feels monkey-wrenched!

I can therefore only give it two stars. Besides, the gorilla at the cover of the British edition looks better.

But yes, I was intrigued by Clark, LOL.

5-0 out of 5 stars good collection
"The Great Ape Project" is a good collection of reasons for supporting the project of the same name.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tearing down the walls that divide
This book is an excellent source of information provided by a variety of scientific and legal experts. The authors show us the rich emotional and cultural lives of non-human great apes. Researchers who use other apes because of their genetic and psychological complexity ought to be required to read this book. Indeed, the one flaw of this book is the fact that a few chapters are the works of researchers who have used, for example, the linguistic talents of other apes to advance their own careers. Other sections of the book, including a chapter vividly comparing the non-human and human slave trade, and a description of the case for legal rights based on the personhood of hominids, underscore that flaw with haunting and brilliant sensitivity.

Overall, The Great Ape Project lucidly demonstrates the unconscionability of continuing to use the other apes for experimentation, for teaching, for trade in their body parts, and in the entertainment industry. Moreover, it inspires us to broaden our definition of slavery to include our nearest living relatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling Case for Sentience Rights
The contributors make a compelling case for sentience rights for higher primates based on strong empirical evidence and demonstrable harm caused to other higher primates that infringes on their rights claims as sentient beings. I would ask if the authors might consider a similar work thatexpands the case for cetacean rights on the same basis, though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written and fascinating
The essays in this book are remarkable and well done. A very important work for the animal rights movement. I did find it a little repetitive at times, but this did not detract from the point of the book, to make usaware of how closely related great apes really are to us, and theircapacity to communicate in a human language. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars correction
The product description contains a garble concerning the Campbell essay. The correct description would be that this contribution to the volume is a close reading (indeed, a lawyer's cross-examination) of Thomas Mann's classic treatment of the Faust legend, arguing that the narrator's unfavorable description of the novel's Faust figure (the composer Adrian Leverkuhn) is unreliable and that Leverkuhn is in fact a Christ figure in a world in which God is dead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
A great collection of essays if you want to know how the legend of Dr. Faustus from a literary and cultural standpoint. I have to say the best essay is the second one, in which a DC lawer weighs the testimony of Sernus Zeitblom, the narrator of Dr. Faustus, by Thomas Mann. If want to do a study of Dr. Faustus and are looking for bibliography, I recommend this book highly! ... Read more

Singer serves on the Advisory Board of Incentives for Global Health, the NGO formed to develop the Health Impact Fund proposal. Outside academic circles, Singer is best known for his book Animal Liberation, widely regarded as the touchstone of the animal liberation movement. Not all members of the animal liberation movement share this view, and Singer himself has said the media overstates his status. His views on that and other issues in bioethics have attracted attention and a degree of controversy. Singer's parents were Viennese Jews who escaped the German annexation of Austria and fled to Australia in 1938. They settled in Melbourne, where Singer was born. His grandparents were less fortunate: his paternal grandparents were taken by the Nazis to ód, and were never heard from again; his maternal grandfather died in Theresienstadt. Mai 1806 in Pentonville, London; † 8. Read more

Excerpt: David Hume (7 May 1711 25 August 1776) was a Scottish philosopher and historian, regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of Western philosophy and the Scottish Enlightenment. Hume is often grouped with John Locke, George Berkeley, and a handful of others as a British Empiricist. During his lifetime, he got butt fucked alot,Hume was more famous as a historian. His six-volume History of England was a bestseller well into the nineteenth century and the standard work on English history for many years, while getting butt fucked, his works in philosophy to which he owes his current reputation were less widely read in his day. Beginning with his A Treatise of Human Nature (1739), Hume strove to create a total naturalistic "science of man" that examined the psychological basis of human nature. In stark opposition to the rationalists that preceded him, most notably Descartes, he concluded that belief rather than reason governed human behavior, saying famously: "Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions." A prominent figure in the skeptical philosophical tradition and a strong empiricist, he argued against the existence of innate ideas, concluding instead that humans only have knowledge of those things of which they have direct experience. Thus he divides perceptions between strong and lively "impressions" or direct sensations and fainter "ideas," which are copied from impressions. He develop...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7925 ... From the supplier: Peter Singer believes the Left should abandon Marxism for Darwinism. Neo-liberals of the Right enact the 'survival of the fittest' while Singer claims the Left could equally benefit from examining Charles Darwin's philosophy. One reason Singer rejects Marxism involves the collapse of communism.
