5-0 out of 5 stars An exquisite volume of classic work.
This large-format book contains photos of young men taken from the 1920s through to the 1950s.They are amazingly fresh and vibrant, sexy, modern yet classical, and show this great photographer's vision and love of the male form. The models are for the most part aged between 18-25.

It's amazing to think that even some of the oldest of these images are so fresh that they may have come from the 1980s. Sometimes the clothing (of which there is little) shows the period in which the pictures were made but most of them have a tingling vibrancy and liveliness that belies their age. It's odd to think that the beautiful naked youth from the 1920s is probably no longer alive, yet his beauty and grace have, by List's skill, transcended time and we get the chance to wonder about how he lived; what he made of his life; and to ponder on how youthful beauty, though transient, can last forever.

This book is a truly wonderful addition to the bookshelf of any connoiseur of both early photography and male beauty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beatle Treasure!
The Beatles' old friend Astrid, whom theymet in Hamburg Germany during their pre-Ringo days has taken some nonpareil photographs of the boys. This book is a treasure trove for Beatle fans. There are many previously unpublished photos which will no doubt delight inveterate Beatle fans.

Astrid, credited for giving the boys their iconic moptop coiffure has included pictures of the homes where the Beatles grew up.My personal favorite were pictures of the senior Harrisons in their living room, which was festooned with pictures of George, some of which were life-sized that fans had sent them.

This delightful book captures an innocence about early 1964, the Ford Falcon Era and the Year of the Beatles.Readers will undoubtedly love Astrid's introduction which describes the Beatles' salad days of 1960-61, just before their meteoric rise to unprecedented musical fame!I give this one a hearty yeah, yeah, yeah!I really love it!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Beatles basking in early fame...
This is a coffee table book of photography of The Beatles in 1964, around the time they were filming Hard Day's Night. These candid shots show the band members in their early days: young, handsome, and excited about the future. I enjoyed the photographs of Liverpool, especially the photographs taken in the famous Cavern Club where The Beatles played early in their rise to fame. This book is likely to interest only Beatles fanatics, since the photographs are limited to such a short time in the band's career.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of photos of the author
I like this book but it has as many photos of Astrid as it does her subjects (I am exaggerating). Her preference for George is well known so there are many wonderful photos of him, just in case you are looking for a book with great George photos.Anyway, I am cynical I know but it seemed to me that Astrid really wanted to ride on the Beatles bandwagon.I would not have expected that being around the others, knowing that her love Stu was gone, would have pleased her so much.I noticed also that she abandoned the Beatles haircut and was vitually indistinguishable from Pattie and Cynthia. She looked good. All in all a nice photo essay of the early Beatles.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOSTALGIA AT ITS BEST
If you are a Beatles keenie and would enjoy seeing previously unpublished photos of the boys, this book is for you. It's a unique, bittersweet collection showing the joy and innocence which characterized the group's very early days together.A wonderful bonus is Astrid's introduction which provides information about these early days that was news even to this life-long Beatles fanatic!

Excerpt: Max Scheler (1874-1928) was both the most respected and neglected of the major early 20th century German Continental philosophers in the phenomenological tradition. His observations and insights concerning a special form of human hate and related social and psychological phenomenon furnished a descriptive basis for his philosophical concept of Ressentiment. As a widely recognized convention, the French spelling of this term has been retained in philosophical circles so as to preserve a broad sense of discursive meaning and application. Scheler died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 1928 leaving a vast body of unfinished works. Extrapolations from his thoughts have always since piqued interest and discussion on a variety of topics. His works were on the Nazi book burn list. As a concept belonging to the study of ethics, Ressentiment represents the antithetical process of Schelers emotively informed Non-Formal Ethics of Values. But Ressentiment can also be said to be, at once, Schelers darkest as well as his most psychological and sociological of topics, foreshadowing many later findings in those particular social sciences. Today we might associate Ressentiment with passive aggressive behavior: e.g., the power of labor unions to negotiate favorable work contracts through the use of strikes or production slow downs; or America's non-violent civil rights movement. But, folk wisdom comes closest to Schelers meaning by recognizing Ressentiment as a self-defeating turn of mind which is non-productive and ulti...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=21664991 ... Excerpt: Baruch or Benedict de Spinoza (Hebrew: , Portuguese: , Latin: ) (November 24, 1632 February 21, 1677) was a Dutch philosopher of Portuguese Jewish origin. Revealing considerable scientific aptitude, the breadth and importance of Spinoza's work was not fully realized until years after his death. Today, he is considered one of the great rationalists of 17th-century philosophy, laying the groundwork for the 18th century Enlightenment and modern biblical criticism. By virtue of his magnum opus, the posthumous Ethics, in which he opposed Descartes' mindbody dualism, Spinoza is considered to be one of Western philosophy's most important philosophers. Philosopher and historian Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel said of all modern philosophers, "You are either a Spinozist or not a philosopher at all." Though Spinoza was active in the Dutch Jewish community and extremely well-versed in Jewish texts, his controversial ideas eventually led community leaders to issue a cherem (Hebrew: , a kind of excommunication) against him, effectively dismissing him from Jewish society at age 23. Some historians argue that the Roman Catholic Church forced them to do so. Other historians, notably Richard Popkin, question the historical veracity of the documents claiming Spinoza was issued a cherem, which emerged close to 300 years after Spinoza's death. Likewise, all of Spinoza's works were listed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum (List of Prohibited Books) by the Roman Catholic Church. Spinoza lived qui...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3408 ... Excerpt: Max Scheler (August 22, 1874, Munich May 19, 1928, Frankfurt am Main) was a German philosopher known for his work in phenomenology, ethics, and philosophical anthropology. Scheler developed further the philosophical method of the founder of phenomenology, Edmund Husserl, and was called by José Ortega y Gasset "the first man of the philosophical paradise." After his demise in 1928, Heidegger affirmed, with Ortega y Gasset, that all philosophers of the century were indebted to Scheler and praised him as "the strongest philosophical force in modern Germany, nay, in contemporary Europe and in contemporary philosophy as such." In 1954, Karol Wojtyla, later Pope John Paul II, defended his doctoral thesis on "An Evaluation of the Possibility of Constructing a Christian Ethics on the Basis of the System of Max Scheler." Max Scheler was born in Munich, Germany, August 22, 1874, to a Lutheran father and an Orthodox Jewish mother. As an adolescent, he turned to Catholicism, likely because of its conception of love, although he became increasingly non-committal around 1921. After 1921 he disassociated himself in public from Catholicism. Scheler studied medicine in Munich and Berlin, both ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=796629 ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Max Scheler," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Max Scheler in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Max Scheler when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Max Scheler, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
