Editorial Review

Product Description
The Martin Buber-Carl Rogers Dialogue offers a corrected and extensively annotated version of this central text in human sciences. Focusing on the sole meeting between these two central figures in twentieth-century intellectual life, Anderson and Cissna return to the original 1957 audio tape and to a variety of other primary sources as they correct and clarify the historical record.

The authors highlight hundreds of errors, major and minor, in previously distributed and published transcripts--beginning with the typescript circulated by Rogers himself. They also show how an accurate text enhances our understanding of the relationship between Buber's philosophy and Rogers's client- and person-centered approach to interpersonal relations. Anderson and Cissna discuss the central issues of the conversation, including the limits of mutuality, approaches to "self," alternative models of human nature, confirmation of others, and the nature of dialogic relation itself. Although Buber and Rogers conversed nearly forty years ago, their topics clearly resonate with contemporary debates about postmodernism, forms of otherness, cultural studies, and the possibilities for a dialogic public sphere. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible edition taken from a recording.
When I read this book I was astonished by the form it is presented to the public. It confers the reader an authentic way of comparing the Dialogue. Two "grate thinkers" of the Self: one from the view point of therapy and Dr. Buber making emphasis on the implementation of "I and Thou" the "golden word" of existence. Remarcable dialogue. I do recomend it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hodes and Buber- I and thou- with a bit too much of the 'I'
This book starts well, relating the young Hodes first encounters with Martin Buber. In these chapters we learn much about Buber's philosophy of dialogue, and meeting. Hodes describes Buber as being open , receptive, spontaneous and totally with the person he is speaking with. Hodes goes on to briefly outline the major steps in Buber's path in thought, including his breaking away from formal observance( at the age of fourteen) his education in philosophy at German universities, his encounter with Herzl and adoption of cultural Zionism, his meeting with the Hasidim of Galicia and his becoming the 'revealer' of Hasidism to the wider world, his struggles against Nazi Germany and for the Jewish community, his years in Israel as world- sage less than fully honored at home.
Somewhere in the book it becomes too political and also involves a bit too much of Hodes, his views and story. Buber is presented as a wiseman who understood the Israeli- Arab conflict, and thought that peace could be brought by people making peace within themselves. In other words Hodes presents as ' wise and right' views of Buber which not only were in opposition to the common sense of Israelis at their time, but which many can argue now were naive and damaging. One central criticism of Buber after all is that the entire post- Zionist movement has its roots in his thought.
Still there is much to be learned and taken pleasure in in this book, especially in those conversations in which Buber speaks to Hodes about his own thought. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Holiness of Hasidism
Martin Buber is the thinker who brought consciousness of Hasidism to the outside world. He found in the followers of the Baal Shem Tov the search for passionate connection with God. 'Hasidism' was in a sense a revolt against the dryness, exclusiveness and in some sense 'hardness' of the traditional Judaism of its time. Its emphasis of spontaneous emotional worship of God, of involving each and every Jew in the holy life made it controversial at time of its inception and immediately after. Buber in a sense interprets 'Hasidism' around his own philosophy of 'I- Thou' encounter. He too focuses on much of the narrative- mythical story material and downplays the Halachic elements also strong among Traditional Hasidism. For anyone who wishes a wider understanding of the subject it would be good to complement this work with the writings of Gershom Scholem, Buber's great rival in interpreting the movement. I would also recommend Norman Lamm's work on Hasidic thought. ... Read more
