(c. 12141294), also known as Doctor Mirabilis (Latin: "wonderful teacher"), was an English philosopher and Franciscan friar who placed considerable emphasis on empirical methods. He is sometimes credited as one of the earliest European advocates of the modern scientific method inspired by the works of Plato and Aristotle via early Islamic scientists such as Avicenna and Averroes. Roger Bacon was born in Ilchester in Somerset, possibly in 1213 or 1214 at the Ilchester Friary. The only source for his date of birth is his statement in the Opus Tertium, written in 1267, that "forty years have passed since I first learned the alphabet". The 1214 birth date assumes he was not being literal, and may have meant 40 years had passed since he matriculated at Oxford at the age of 13. If he had been literal, his birth date was more likely to have been around 1220/1222. In the same passage he reports that for all but two of those forty years he had always been engaged in study. His family appears to have been well-off, but, during the stormy reign of Henry III of England, their property was despoiled and several members of the family were driven into exile. Bacon studied and later became a Master at Oxford, lecturing on Aristotle. There is no evidence he was ever awarded a doctorate the title Doctor Mirabilis was posthumous and figurative. Sometime between 1237 and 1245, he began to lecture at the university of Paris, then the center of intellectual life in Europe. His whereabouts between 1247 and 1256 are uncertain, but about 1256 he became a Friar in the Franciscan Order. As a Franciscan Friar, Bacon no longer held a teaching post, and after 1260 his activities were further restrict...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=25879 ... Read more

Excerpt: Jall ad-Dn Muammad Balkh (Persian: ), also known as Jall ad-Dn Muammad Rm (Persian: ), and popularly known as Mowln (Persian: ) but known to the English-speaking world simply as Rumi (30 September 1207 17 December 1273), was a 13th-century Persian poet, jurist, theologian, and Sufi mystic. Rm is a descriptive name meaning "the Roman" since he lived most of his life in an area called Rm because it was once ruled by the Byzantine Empire. Rumi was born in Greater Balkh (Bakhtarzamin), and thus he is called Balkhi. He was born in the village of Wakhsh, a small town located at the river Wakhsh in what is now Tajikistan. Wakhsh belonged to the larger province of Balkh, and in the year Rumi was born, his father was an appointed scholar there. Both these cities were at the time included in the Greater Persian cultural sphere of Khorasan, the easternmost province of historical Persia, and were part of the Khwarezmian Empire. His birthplace and native language both indicate a Persian heritage. His father decided to migrate westwards due to quarrels between different dynasties in Khorasan, opposition to the Khwarizmid Shahs who were considered devious by Bah ud-Dn Walad (Rumi's father), or fear of the impending Mongol cataclysm. 1920. Conquests by arms are trivial in their permanent effects compared with the conquests of mind over matter, In the world of thought, there are the sources of progress to be found, and it was a significant fact, and momentous in its significance, that men of learning in 1914 found it in their hearts to do homage for the first time to Roger Bacon. For long he suffered calumny and neglect; though unlike so many innovators in scientific speculation, it is true that he escaped torture and death at the hands of his contemporaries. He nevertheless suffered much persecution, as well shall learn in what follows. Contents: molding of Roger Bacon's mind; fruits of Roger Bacon's learning; astrology; alchemy; medicine; magic and the discovery of gunpowder. ... Read more

Excerpt: Kublai or Khubilai Khan (September 23, 1215 February 18, 1294 ) (Mongolian: ; Chinese: ; pinyin: Hbìliè), was the fifth Great Khan of the Mongol Empire from 1260 to 1294 and the founder of the Yuan Dynasty in China. As the second son of Tolui and Sorghaghtani Beki and a grandson of Genghis Khan, he claimed the title of Khagan of the Ikh Mongol Uls (Mongol Empire) in 1260 after the death of his older brother Möngke in the previous year, though his younger brother Ariq Böke was also given this title in the Mongolian capital at Karakorum. He eventually won the battle against Ariq Böke in 1264, and the succession war essentially marked the beginning of the civil war of the Mongol empire. But the Mongol Empire, as a whole, remained united and strong. Kublai's influence was still strong in the Ilkhanate and Golden Horde, western parts of the Mongol Empire. His realm reached from the Pacific to the Urals, from Siberia to Afghanistan one fifth of the world's inhabited land area. In 1271, Kublai established the Yuan Dynasty, which at that time ruled over present-day Mongolia, Tibet, Eastern Turkestan, North China, much of Western China, and some adjacent areas, and assumed the role of Emperor of China.
