D'origine néerlandaise et allemande, Persoon est né en Afrique du Sud. Sa mère meurt peu de temps après sa naissance. À l'âge de treize ans, son père (qui meurt un an plus tard) l'envoie en Europe pour ses études. Il étudie d'abord la théologie, puis la médecine, et reçoit un doctorat honorifique en 1799. Il s'installe à Paris en 1802, où il passa le reste de sa vie en louant l'étage supérieur d'une maison dans un quartier pauvre de la ville. Il était apparemment célibataire, au chômage, frappés par la pauvreté et la solitude, mais il correspondait avec les botanistes de toute l'Europe. Il était correspondant de la Société royale de Göttingen, membre de l'Académie des Sciences de Turin, de la Société des Naturalistes de Berlin, de la Vettéravie et de la Société Linnéenne de Philadelphie. L'origine de son intérêt pour la botanique est inconnue. Le genre Persoonia a été nommé en son hommage. En 1801, il publie deux volumes du Synopsis methodica fungorum, point de départ de la nomenclature des Uredinales, Ustilaginales, et Gasteromycetes. De 1805 à 1807, il publie Synopsis plantarum, une œuvre de vulgarisation décrivant 20 000 espèces de plantes. Adamson was born on March 31, 1871 in Georgia to Augustus Pitt Adamson and Martilla Ellen Cook. He began writing articles for the Macon, Georgia newspaper while still in his teens. At age 20, he became city editor of the Atlanta Constitution. He later moved to New York City and worked as a reporter for The New York Sun, the New York World, and the Brooklyn Eagle. He married Ethel McClintock May on December 10, 1902 at Trinity Chapel in Manhattan. In 1910, Adamson became secretary to New York Mayor William Jay Gaynor, and gained fame by helping thwart an assassination attempt on Gaynor. When Gaynor died in September 1910, Adamson continued as secretary to the new mayor, Ardolph Loges Kline. In 1914, he was campaign manager for John Purroy Mitchel, who after his election appointed Adamson as the 9th Fire Commissioner of the City of New York.
