Product Description
How do faith and reason relate to the Prophet Joseph Smith? Michael Ash, well-known LDS apologist, explains why it s useful and perhaps necessary to have both in your testimony of Joseph Smith. In the early 1800s, many criticized Joseph for his prophecies and revelations. Today, several evidences prove that Joseph was right. Using scholarly journal articles and ancient Jewish and Christian writings, Michael Ash shows how the Book of Mormon is a true account of an ancient people, how LDS scriptures are consistent with the traditions and culture of ancient Israel, and how the doctrines of the Church accurately reflect the teachings of Christ. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling and Straightforward Writing
I read Michael Ash's "Shaken Faith Syndrome" and was impressed with his faith and logical reasoning, so I was excited to see that he had written another book.Since the title of this book includes "80 evidences supporting the prophet Joseph Smith," I thought more of his 80 evidences would specifically deal with the prophet's character. However, he does a great job defending the Book of Mormon and Mormon Doctrine and those are the fruits of Joseph's work.Whether you believe Joseph was a prophet or not, this book provides a reasonable and faithful argument that should at least be considered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I read this book in 2 days. It was easy to read but very scholarly. I challenge anyone to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A concise volume useful for those who are interested in Mormon apologetics, but don't want to be buried in it!
There are plenty of LDS apologetic articles available via FAIR and FARMS, for those who are interested in in-depth study. This somewhat slim but, info-packed volume provides clear and concise evidences for the prophetic work of Joseph Smith, but in a more general form.It gives an expansive overview of the current apologetic reasoning, without the exhaustive detail that isn't everyone's "cup of tea."There are footnotes for further study, should you wish to learn more about a certain subject.Overall, I'm very impressed with this work, and it is a great resource for those seeking a general overview. ... Product Description
Michael McCarty has played a major role in defining a uniquely modern American attitude to cooking, dining, and entertaining since 1979, when he opened his first acclaimed Michael"s restaurant in Santa Monica, California. McCarty"s approach, now enjoyed on both coasts with the opening of Michael's New York in 1989, has always been refreshingly simple: start with the best ingredients, cook them in simple ways that highlight their natural qualities, pair them with great wines, and serve them in a relaxed yet stylish setting. The result, in Michael's own words, should be a "great party," which this book makes possible for any home cook.Adding to the lively spirit of Welcome to Michael's are the voices of dozens of luminaries from the worlds of entertainment, the arts, the media, business, politics, and cooking who share their own insightful, sometimes irreverent opinions about the Michael's experience. The result is a book to be savored on many levels: as a guide to cooking for yourself, your family, and your friends and to entertaining with style; as a primer on the rewarding relationship between food and wine; and as an experience that comes as close as words and pictures possibly can to enjoying a meal at one of Michael's restaurants, surrounded by the luminous personalities who dine there. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Michael's
I,m very happy with the purchase of this book. It was sent promptly and was in excellent condition! I'll be eating dinner at Michaels in Santa Monica in February for my birthday! I can't wait, I'm sure it will be everything I expect it to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good bread, good meat, good God! Let's EAT!
Michael's book oozes with his tenacity for food. What makes each menu item taste even better are the accompanying anecdotes describing the nature and origin of the dish.

I purchased it for my mother for Christmas, and she has called or e-mailed me frequently to share a Michael insight or memory, as she has followed his career with enthusiasm and even attended a workshop of his at Michigan State University.

While this book is not your standard measurements and prepartions cook book, what you get out of it is more than dinner. You get inspiration, and the smiling face of Michael McCarty.

Cheers,

Kelsey

A leader in the California Cuisine movement shares his tastes, preferences, technique and enthusiasm in a handsomely illustrated, well-written book of recipes and recommendations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Eat, drink and be merry
I don't like to cook. At least in the past I didn't like to cook. But as I've gotten older and haven't had to cook for children anymore and with the advent of Top Chef, the television program that I love, I'm actually becoming curious about learning. So far all I do is study cookbooks and occasionally take a heartfelt stab at trying a recipe or two. It's a start.

Welcome to Michael's is an interesting cookbook because it's not just filled with scrumptious recipes, Michael also talks about the ingredients-the actual food that makes a dish great, rather than so-so. I found I had a new understanding about ingredients, their smell, freshness, color, crispness and the like. It makes a difference.

Michael's instructions were easy-to-follow and the photographs were not only beautiful, but contribute to helping the preparer `do it right.' Not all of the ingredients were those generally found in a kitchen (at least mine) but the end result (taste and appearance) make that extra trip to the market worthwhile.

My favorite recipes are: Jumbo Asparagus with a Seven-Minute Egg and Black Truffles. Oh, the black truffles! The Deep-Fried Soft-Shell Crabs with Ponzu Sauce and Asian Slaw (I didn't make but my mouth is watering) is a must make. The Grilled Copper River Sockeye Salmon with Fava Bean, White Corn, and Wild Mushroom Succotash is going to become my signature dish, I just know it. Now the Roast Chicken with Herb Butter is mouth-watering good. Everyone at the table loved it. A dessert to die for is the Flourless Chocolate Cake and the Cinnamon Rolls will be my downfall. Tomorrow morning I'm treating myself to Michael's Eggs Benedict, and I know I will be in heaven. Bring on that Hollandaise Sauce!

Welcome to Michael's just might help me with an attitude adjustment about cooking. I've already tried several of the recipes and have marked more for further attention.

Armchair Interviews says: Welcome to Michael's is a cookbook for everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars The next best thing to having lunch there

Every few weeks, I meet friends at Michael's Restaurant. That's the sort of thing you do when you're a sole proprietor of a media shop in Manhattan --- you go where the Kool Kids go, just to remind them that you're alive.

And then you have lunch.

If that sounds like an inverted set of priorities, you're not a New Yorker. We get the reality: Michael's is two establishments in one. The first is a media cafeteria for the extremely powerful and their court jesters. The other is a damn good restaurant. Everybody talks about the cafeteria. The restaurant is noted mostly in passing. Both are misunderstood.

The powerhouse lunchroom is misunderstood because it is exclusive without being snooty. Michael's has white tablecloths and huge flower arrangements and walls covered with Hockneys and Diebenkorns, and it is annoyingly expensive and getting more so with every menu change, but you can go there, even if you're Nobody. You may not get to sit in the fabled front room. But over time, as you get to know the staff and/or make something of yourself, your lot may improve. This is in dramatic contrast to another exclusive lunchroom, the now-departed Mortimer's, where innocents routinely entered an empty dining room only to have the owner peer dismissively over his glasses and announce that his establishment was full.

The restaurant is misunderstood because so many people go there to rub shoulders with peers and would-be peers that they barely notice the food. It is possible to eat well here, but this is not a clientele that likes to chow down. If ever a restaurant should have a compost heap, it's Michael's.

Neither misunderstanding is fatal. Michael's has been a popular restaurant in Santa Monica for 30 years and has owned the power lunch business in Manhattan for almost two decades. That is not a record we will see broken in our lifetimes, and while it takes a village to raise a restaurant, most of the credit should go to the founder, Michael McCarty.

McCarty is such an exuberant guy --- "Party on, dude!" is his signature line --- that he's the restaurant's biggest misunderstanding of all. Alice Waters usually gets the major ink for inventing New American Cuisine, but McCarty was right there with her. And he has the credentials to prove it. After a privileged childhood of parties at summer resorts and ski retreats and an apprenticeship as a teenage gourmet at New York's better restaurants, he rushed off to Europe. He returned with a Certificate d'Aptitude Professionelle from the Ecole Hoteliere de Paris, a Grand Diplome from the Cordon Bleu, and a diploma from the Academy du Vin --- and a vision.

His vision was simple. He would streamline the eternally elegant recipes of France and prepare them using the freshest ingredients in America, then he'd serve his food in a room that was lovely but relaxed. As he puts it: "My cooking is presented simply, dramatically, with none of the fussiness you find in many fancy kitchens. Even those dishes that contain butter and cream, I use the light hand that modern sensibilities demand."

What McCarty does not say: He's a Rabelaisian spirit, maybe even Falstaffian. Truffles? Pile them on! Fois gras? Thicker! So let's be clear: This is not your everyday cookbook. It's got some great twists on old favorites --- like the salad of goat cheese, beets and lettuce dressed with a white wine-dijon vinaigrette --- but for every grilled chicken with tarragon butter there's a recipe for grilled chicken with duck foie gras and morels. If you're not billing your life to your employer, you may have to restrain yourself here.

But this cookbook has charms beyond food. It's also a summary of Michael McCarty's philosophy. Given his success, his obvious happiness and his uncanny ability to make the most neurotic people on the planet feel at home, that philosophy merits your attention. And, for good measure, some of the regulars offer their Michael's stories, which are often as funny and irreverent as the owner.

Product Description
Frank Foley worked as Passport Control Officer in Berlin during the war and helped thousands of Jews to escape from Germany. At the 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann he was described as a 'Scarlet Pimpernel', risking his own life to save Jews threatened with death by the Nazis. In fact, his post at the Passport Office was a front for his real role as MI6 head of station. Despite having no diplomatic immunity and being liable to arrest at any time, he went into the concentration camps to get Jews out, he hid them in his home and helped them to get forged passports. One Jewish aid worker estimated that he saved 'tens of thousands' of people from the Holocaust. Michael Smith has researched and vividly written one of the greatest unknown heroic stories of the Second World War. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The little man
This well-intended book about a British secret service agent working at the British embassy in Berlin in the years before World War Two, makes somewhat tedious reading over the many pages which relate the individual circumstances of persons who had turned to him for assistance, although it does pay a fitting tribute to the valiant efforts of this man who provided Jews with documents allowing them to emigrate to Palestine - against stiff opposition from British government circles that did not want to antagonize the Arabs.

On the other hand, this array of individual fates bears witness to the reluctance of many countries to provide shelter not only for the German Jews but also for Jews from other countries pursuing a policy of forced emigration, such as Poland. In this connection, the author provides a good description of the quandary faced by some 70,000 Jews of Polish nationality living in Germany who, in 1938, were threatened by the loss of their Polish nationality - they did not wish to return to a country whose anti-Jewish policies, ever since Poland's re-establishment in 1919, had been at least as severe as Hitler's measures up to that time and showed no signs of letting up. Their problem was solved when the Germans, not wanting to end up with 70 000 stateless Jews on their hands in addition to their own, simply rounded them up and dumped them on the Polish border. This incident, in turn, generated a chain of events which led to the assassination of a German diplomat in Paris and to a pogrom in Germany in November of that year.

The book also sheds some light on the under-cover actions which the Comintern, Moscow's international organization, was carrying out all over the world. As we now know, the Soviets were much more dangerous to the free societies in the West at the time than Hitler's hankering after Lebensraum in the East.

Being a specialist on Germany, the book's hero became involved in a number of WW2 `sting' operationsnot the least important one of which concerned Rudolf Hess' flight to Scotland in May of 1941.The author does make it clear (p. 188 et seq.) that the trap for the Germans had been sprung by the British who started a line of communication with the German side via Lisbon in an effort to fool the Germans into believing that a British peace party wanted to bring the war to an end. Other authors, such as Martin Allen and Picknett et al. have elaborated on the events that ensued and which culminated in Hess' flight and the German invasion of the Soviet Union a month later.

A quote from a letter written by Foley in the summer of 1942 illustrates all too well the hysterical spirit of that tumultuous period, which had permeated even Foley's normally sober way of thinking; he in fact advocates `extermination' of the `Teutonic beast' as the only solution and says that Britain was working hard to that end.

On the material side, the book contains a number of mistakes which could have been avoided; they concern chiefly the spelling of place names in foreign countries, but there are also some factual misrepresentations, e.g on p. 204 with respect to Foley's transfer to St. Albans and the German invasion of the Soviet Union.

Summing things up, it is the sidelights on issues other than the plight of the Jews in pre-WW2 Europe which constitute the book's more valuable historical contributions.

5-0 out of 5 stars The model for George Smiley?
In the Spring of 1918, one-time student Frank Foley copped a bullet. His brigade took the brunt of a German attack sweeping over some small villages in the Somme. He survived to be sent home to England to recover.By the time he was ready to return to active service, the great August offensive had bled Germany's military strength. The Armistice left Foley at loose ends, except some alert soul had reviewed his file. There, it was revealed that the wounded officer had not only studied in Germany before The Great War, but to avoid internment, he had virtually walked out of the country undetected. From this revelation, Frank Foley embarked on an intelligence career that would keep him occupied for the remainder of his life.In this lively and informative biography, Michael Smith depicts a man many thousands called "hero" and "saviour".For Frank Foley became instrumental in saving thousands of Jews from Hitler's Germany.

To a generation steeped in various incarnations of "James Bond" type spies, the image of Frank Foley seems entirely anomalous.Alec Guiness as "George Smiley" bears a striking resemblance to the photos of Foley in this book.A short, stocky, bespectacled man who looked as if he should be out pottering about with his roses, instead took up station in post-war Berlin to keep watch on Bolsheviks. The rise of Hitler's thugs found Foley shifting roles.Using his cover as Passport Control Officer, he began easing the path for emigres fleeing Germany. As this was the height of the world Depression of the 1930s, many nations took advantage of economic stress to close their doors to Jewish immigrants.Foley sent as many as possible to Britain, but the other option was Palestine, then under Britain's "mandate".When Arab residents objected to the sharp rise in immigrant numbers, a new force came into being.Mossad, now Israel's infamous spy agency, at that time was instrumental in smuggling Jewish refugees into Palestine.A final choice, bizarre as it reads today, was Shanghai, China. No objection was raised at the influx of Jews entering the territory and thousands transported there.

As an intelligence officer based in Berlin, Foley was well placed to discern the onset of World War II in Europe. He and his family duplicated his earlier feat, leaving Germany by circuitous routes.Placed in new sites, Foley was chased across Europe by advancing Nazi forces. He smuggled a wireless set into his station in Norway, which allowed General Otto Ruge to appeal for aid from Britain. The aid, unfortunately, was an invasion force that landed almost a thousand kilometres from the Wehrmacht forces.Driven from Norway, Foley became part of the "Twenty Club".This organisation was actually the XX Committee established to deal with German spies in Britain and misleading Axis intelligence. It's main thrust was to "turn" German agents, feeding them false or insufficient data to confuse the Abwehr. The group was so effective that one of its senior officers claimed every German agent in Britain was actually employed by the British.Stranger still are the accounts of "agents" who set themselves up in Lisbon, neutral Portugal's capital, feeding stories of conditions in the UK to the Abwehr for cash. One of the better known of these, "Garbo", had never set foot in Britain.Using tourist guidebooks and other easily acquired publications, he acted as a "free-lance double-cross operation in miniature".He was effective enough to remain undetected throughout the war.

The invasion of Europe and overrunning of Nazi Germany didn't bring about Frank Foley's retirement.Instead, his experience made his return to Berlin an essential element in the "Denazification" programme.Although the victorious Allies had declared that all aspects of the Nazi party were to be eradicated, this was easier to promise than to implement.Since Party membership had become essential for any employment of consequence, including all levels of government, total curtailment of anybody suspected of being a Party member in the restoration of German society would have made rebuilding impossible.Foley concentrated on finding former SS officers. Some of these had coalesced into the Deutsche Revolution, a body aimed at restoration of the Nazi regime.

Foley's services were but mildly recognised by the British government. When the Norwegians had wanted to honour him with a medal, the Foreign Office hindered the award. He was "gonged" later, at a ceremony shifted from the normal location due to bomb damage. To Smith, the first real reward for Foley's efforts, was the grove of trees planted in his honour by a former colleague. That this came about after Foley's death is a source of regret to Smith.Even more regrettable was that Frank Foley's name had been put forward as a "Righteous Person Among Nations", Israel's highest award for non-Jews.It was granted Foley just after the book was published.Read Smith's account to understand why.The "why" of the delay in granting it has never been explained.[stephen a. haines- Ottawa, Canada] ... For 2nd and 3rd year courses in international politics and foreign policy. This text examines foreign policy in relation to 'change and transformation.' It discusses traditional assumptions about foreign policy and foreign policy making, and develops a framework to facilitate analysis of the challenges faced by foreign policy makers in the late 1990s. The central elements of the framework are the foreign policy arena, decision-making and implementation. The book then applies the framework to a set of regional case studies, to explore the global and regional arenas and the challenges to which they give rise. Finally, specific case studies of two countries per region highlight the range of impacts for the changing global and regional context, to focus on the analysis of decision-making and implementation, and to illustrate the benefits of comparative analysis. ... Product Description
There was frustration in Oliver Cowdery's 4 February 1835 letter to Bishop Newel K. Whitney. Oliver Cowdery was trying to acquire "the original copy of ... The Law of the Church" and had so far been unable to locate a reliable source. He even confessed publicly to being "not a little surprised" in preparing the revelations of Joseph Smith for publication "to find the previous print[ing in the church newspaper] so different from the original." The problem, as historian Richard P. Howard has noted, was that Cowdery was using "a different original" from what he had seen four years earlier.Indeed, agrees author H. Michael Marquardt, it is apparent that the 1835 version of Smith's revelations was a "revised, expanded text that contained material anachronistic to the original 1831 setting." More specifically, many documents were "added to, excised, and in some cases assigned different historical settings. ... Among other emendations, the changes softened language, reinterpreted economic matters, added offices existing at the time of revision, and inserted references to priesthood restoration." Where events had "not unfolded as proposed," prophecies were reevaluated and, where necessary, revised. What does it matter? Many of the changes are significant, whether one sees them as historical curiosities, background to the intent of now ambiguous passages, or as insight into God's "line upon line" dealings with mortal men and women. The latter may be the most important, as the "evolution of the canon" implies something about the nature of revelation itself. The obvious casualty for anyone undertaking a careful study of church documents is the assumption of infallibility versus a fluid, dynamic model of revelation, what Marquardt calls the "richness of the living text as it is transformed over time." This new understanding reveals "important, fundamental vistas" for understanding doctrine, policy, and history. In some ways Marquardt's seminal study reminds one of the work of biblical scholars sifted through ancient parchments. The object in this case is the earliest extant manuscripts of Joseph Smith's revelations. Marquardt compares these to the canonized versions of the documents as included in the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants; adding annotation and commentary for convenience. The source documents include: A Book of Commandments (manuscript, Law and Covenants books B and C, and printed sheets from 1833), the Book of the Law of the Lord manuscript, the William Clayton Journal, Zebedee Coltrin Journal, The Evening and the Morning Star, Joseph Smith Letterbook 1, Kirtland Revelations Book manuscript, Manuscript Letter to John E. Page, Manuscript History books A-1 and C-1, Manuscript Revelations Collection, William E. McLellin Collection, Scriptory Book of Joseph Smith manuscript, Joseph Smith Journal, Frederick G. Williams Papers, Newel K. Whitney Collection, and many others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute "must-have" resource for college libraries
Retired civil servant and independent historian H. Michael Marquardt presents The Joseph Smith Revelations Text & Commentary, a thoughtful and insightful examination of how canonical Mormon text - indeed, the revelations of Joseph Smith himself - have allegedly been revised and altered in significant ways, an issue visibly noted as early as within Oliver Cowdery's 1835 letter to Bishop Newel K. Whitney, which complained that "the original copy of... The Law of the Church" had substantial alterations from its 1831 rendition. Marquardt advances to the viewpoint that when studying church documents, one should be avoid assumptions of absolute infallibility, but instead explore a dynamic model of revelation, and scrutinize how the text is transformed over time. An in-depth, scholarly, and thought-provoking analysis of doctrine, policy, and history, The Joseph Smith Revelations Text & Commentary is an absolute "must-have" resource for college libraries and private collections featuring extensive studies of Mormon religious belief and history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable reference book - a must for serious historians
This volume is a record of the revelations received by Joseph Smith which were included in the original "Book of Commandments". It compares the original published revelations with what we have today in the LDS and RLDS "Doctrine and Covenants". Marquardt details what changes were made, when they were made, and where appropriate, adds his own commentary on the changes.

Each revelation has cross-references to the appropriate Section number in today's version for ease of comparison.

To correct the previous reviewer's comments, this is not about the Book of Mormon.

Product Description
This book showcases a collection of extraordinarily beautiful icons that introduces readers and art appreciators to the spiritual riches of the Byzantine liturgical tradition. The author, Father Michael Evdokimov, presents an icon for each of the twelve great feasts of the Orthodox Christian liturgical year. Preceding each icon is a brief commentary of what the reader can hope to find in the icon, including nuances for meditating on the icon. Quotations from spiritual writers of all ages of Christianity are interspersed in the book.

In a simple, straightforward manner, Evdokimov shows how the prayers and the icons used to worship God can nourish the spiritual life. Although he sets before his readers beliefs and practices common to Orthodox people everywhere in the world, anyone who appreciates beautiful art will find much to savor here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text and reproductions
The description for the book says everything essential. I only want to add that this is a very inexpensive book for the quality of the text and images. It is also very large, so it is something that appeals even to non-specialists who enjoy contemplating the icons and their meanings. I strongly suggest this book as an introduction to the Orthodox doctrine and use of icons to honor the saints and worship God. ... Read more

Product Description

How do you measure greatness in education? Neither the length of a vita nor the number of citations can tell the full story of an important figure like George Hillocks, Jr. The best way to understand his ideas and influence is to go inside classrooms where followers channel his passion for inquiry-based learning into dynamic language-arts lessons that support student success.

In Reflective Teaching, Reflective Learning twenty-one of Hillocks' former graduate students share how they apply his principles to encourage adolescents to become critically engaged readers, writers, and speakers. But far from a simple celebration of a master educator's work, Reflective Teaching, Reflective Learning describes specific, practical activities that create authentic, active learning through inquiry, meaningful peer interaction, and reflection. These activities can be put to immediate use as either additions to your existing lessons or as patterns for building new curricular and instructional models.

In an era when teachers face more pressures and scrutiny than ever, Reflective Teaching, Reflective Learning provides compelling testimony to what thoughtful, reflective language-arts teachers can accomplish. Read Reflective Teaching, Reflective Learning and discover that greatness in education is measured one student success at a time.

Product Description
This volume offers a comprehensive range of approaches to the work of Mark E. Smith and his band The Fall in relation to music, art and politics. Mark E. Smith remains one of the most divisive and idiosyncratic figures in popular music after a recording career with his band - The Fall - that spans thirty years. Although The Fall were originally associated with the contemporaneous punk explosion, from the beginning they pursued a highly original vision of what was possible in the sphere of popular music. While other punk bands burned out after a few years, only to then reform decades later as their own cover bands, The Fall continue to evolve while retaining a remarkable consistency, even with the frequent line-up changes that soon left Mark E. Smith as the only permanent member of the group. The key aspect of the group that this volume explores is the invariably creative, unfailingly critical and often antagonistic relations that characterize both the internal dynamics of the group and the group's position in the pop cultural surroundings. The Fall's ambiguous position in the unfolding histories of British popular music and therefore in the new heritage industries of popular culture in the UK, from post-punk to anti-Thatcher politics, to the 'Factory fiction of Manchester' and on into Mark E. Smith's current role as ageing enfant terrible of rock, illustrates the uneasy relationship between the band, their critical commentators and the historians of popular music. This volume engages directly with this critical ambiguity. With a diverse range of approaches to The Fall, this volume opens up new possibilities for writing about contemporary music beyond traditional approaches grounded in the sociology of music, Cultural Studies and music journalism - an aim which is reflected in the variety of provocative critical approaches and writing styles that make up the volume. ...
