Maria Dos Prazeres
I have just read this short story in Spanish, though in a Penguin book of Short Stories in Spanish with parallel text in English.It has a "mysterious realism" with Maria's intuition.A good easy read and thought provoking.

The ending is ambiguous, Maria has been expecting death, having interpreted her dreams, but finds something else worth waiting for.With a short story there is no harm in "giving away" a twist at the end, but worth debating what the ending means.

I am deciding whether:
(a) She has found somone to love and end her loneliness.
(b) The Franco regime has got her.There are lots of references to the Republican heroes and their unmarked graves, she writes on their names in lipstick when she thinks the guards are not watching.The story refers to State Agents shooting dead a student who wrote "Visca Catalunya lliure" on a wall.Could imprisonment for the cause be the ending worth waiting for so many years?Is the car that picked her up a secret service car? ... Muy recomendable
Sin duda una de las novelas en las que Garcia Marquez demuestra todo su talento en la narracion y especialmente en la descripcion. Es la historia de un hombre que va a ser asesinado, y a diferencia del resto del pueblo, el no lo sabe. Pero mas alla de la originalidad de la historia es la capacidad del autor al escribir la que lo lleva a uno a meterse por completo en el libro. Asi como lo hace en otros libros como ¨La Hojarasca¨, juega con los tiempos y esto hace que el libro tenga una dinamica especial y no sea denso o ¨lento¨. ... Read more

Very useful, but more for the extensive bibliography
This book was extremely useful to me considering that I am doing a comparative study of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Franz Kafka. However, though the content was interesting, it is fairly basic; the book appears tobe aimed at High School level students.
