3-0 out of 5 stars Great resource book
Snoring Can Kill is very informative about the cause and dangers of sleep apnea. It includes a detailed description of the sleep study. Goldstein said "There are safe and effective medical solutions readily available to help a person stop snoring." However, no safe and effective solutions were offered. Suggested treatments have been proven to not be very successful. This book is a good resource book for sleep centers, respiratory therapists and the Sleep Disorders Dental Society members. ... Product Description
We are living in remarkable times. A genuine Western Buddhism is now taking birth, writes Joseph Goldstein, one of America's most respected Buddhist teachers. The birth pangs include controversy and conflict -- and fear that genuine teachings may vanish as traditions converge in the melting pot of American practice. But Goldstein recognizes a possibility, indeed a at potential, for the essence of Buddhism to survive on Western soil, in Western minds.

His visionary synthesis points a way for Buddhism to grow and flower while remaining rooted in the teachings of the great Asian schools -- from India and Burma to Tibet and Japan. Marked by a simplicity derived from the Buddha's own pragmatic response to life, Goldstein distills the essential question that is at the base of all the traditions: What works to free the mind from suffering?

He provides a brief historical overview of early Buddhism and explores the mind-changing reflections that bring us to the Dharma path -- the teachings of liberation, free from sectarian attachments. Upon this foundation Goldstein then shows how the great masters from all traditions have pointed to the essence of ultimate freedom. This is the best kind of Dharma book: one that is based on personal experience rather than on theory, accessible to newcomers and seasoned practitioners alike, and rich in practical ways to cultivate the qualities of an awakened mind and heart.

In One Dharma one of America's foremost Buddhist teachers presents the central teachings and practices of the emerging Western Buddhism in clear, personal language. In One Dharma we discover the essential points common to all Buddhist teachings.

Amazon.com Review
Insight Meditation cofounder Joseph Goldstein ponders thepossibility that all Buddhist teachings could be distilled into OneDharma. As Buddhism continues to grow in the West, Goldstein shows usthe value of uniting this movement rather than allowing it to becomefractured by its subtle differences. He does not advocate a watering down ormixing up of the various traditions. Rather, "We can practice each of themin its own integrity and come to a genuine depth of understanding." Readers who are wary of a scholarly analysis of Buddhist nuances need notworry. Goldstein (The Experience of Insight) relies on personalanecdotes and accessible language to explore the common themes in allBuddhist teachings. Though purists will no doubt quibble, Goldstein believesthat following one Dharma is the way the West will be won, weaving together themethods of mindfulness, the motivation of compassion, and the liberatingwisdom of nonclinging. "These three pillars--mindfulness, compassion, andwisdom--are not Indian or Burmese, Japanese or Tibetan; they are qualitiesin our own minds." --Gail Hudson ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars One from Many
When reading this book, I could see how the author's time in Therevedan tradition has given him much to think about.

His experience with the Zen master confirms something essential to Zen, no views will lead to awakening. He procedes to explain with words how things fit together, but again, this is of the mind not awareness. Not meaning any disrespect, but he sounds troubled within, a bit anxious, to find "the answers."There are no answers to seek. There is only "this."Watch.Let's see how the Dharma develops in the West.

4-0 out of 5 stars morality is the reason that no one need fear us
One Dharma provides some historical perspective on the development of the different branches of Buddhism for the past 2,500 years, with the author's thesis being that in Western society we should meld the range of beliefs into one Dharma. The author also provides new information on some facets of Buddhism that was touched on only briefly in his earlier book Insight Meditation, such as: reflections on impermanence; why our morality is the reason that no one need fear us; that the aim of meditation is to be aware of thoughts, not never having any thoughts; and the path to liberation is through nonclinging to delusion. The book is a good companion text to Insight Meditation, but is structured in traditional chapters, so it is not as easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, enlightening; takes one to the core of Buddhism
Joseph Goldstein has the ability to explain the essence of Buddhism and it's core teachings in a very understandable and condensed format. If you are confused by the different Buddhist sects and dogmas, or are interested in the basics of Buddhist practice, then this book is for you.Goldstein has the background and insight to be a believable expert and teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!SHORT AND SWEET...
This is an excellent book that sheds so much light on life itself and true purpose.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully rendered, and often very funny.
I was knocked out by One Dharma. Mostly, as a relatively fledgling Buddhist, I was thankful to have a book that explained, in The-Precisely-Right Language, what the Dharma was and why it might be so important to me - so that this could be explained to my loved ones, and also, reiterated for myself! This quality of the book made the it immensely useful for going deeper into certain concepts with my Buddhist-curious (and very supportive) wife, and it was also a joy to read - beautifully rendered, and often very funny. The book helped my wife to understand key Buddhist concepts, and it helped me too, by putting elements of my practice into terms that made me engage them with a new clarity and focus. It's been my experience that it's rare for a book to speak so clearly to a self-identified Buddhist and also to someone who is not. 'One Dharma' does just that. Also: I have mentioned the book's clarity and humor - I want to mention, too, the writing, which is flows with incredible ease. This is a VERY enjoyable read! ... Read more
