5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding series
I have the first 2 books in the series an I'm psyched to get the 3rd.Like the first 2 it goes into depths that most basic 1st year physics classes don't cover, but still is in a form that is easily understandable to the novice. If you are a physics student it's a must have and I recommend the tips on physics supplement to go over some of the math involved. ... Praise for The Pleasure of Finding Things Out:"[A] sparkling collection."--Wall Street Journal"This marvelous collection of talks, interviews, and essays offers a memorable sample of the wit, brilliance, and irreverence of the most celebrated physicist of our time. The more one reads of Feynman, the more one falls in love with his refreshingly enthusiastic view of the world."--Alan Guth, author of The Inflationary Universe"A delightful reminder of Feynman's prodigious gifts."--Nature"Feynman's distinctive voice rings out in this book."--Scientific AmericanPraise for The Meaning of It All:"From the great physicist's archives, three delightful lectures on science, society, and our precious freedom of ignorance."--New York Times"Richard Feynman was a man of many reputations: brilliant physicist, charismatic teacher, irrepressible raconteur, and unforgettable character ...When Feynman describes the scientist as an acrobat walking 'beautiful tightropes of logic,' we understand how a generation of young physicists might have been drawn to follow this brilliant Pied Piper out onto the wire, high above the crowd."--Boston Globe"Scattered through this book is a wonderful collection of personal stories, told in the authentic Feynman style, bringing his meditations to life."--The New York Review of Books

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool, anecdotic, fun
This is a great book to read on airplanes, or at leisure. Each short work is fascinating, and I felt both marvelled at Feynman, and at the process of discovery.

It is a very human book, and combines very well the soft, sparky, almost childish side of a person, and the deep, analytical, thought provoking, more adult part.

I also made me think about the atomic bomb, since I was born in the 60s, I was too young to remember that frenzie.

The book is also great to get stories and quotes for training and conversation.

The book is not an arid description about a methodology for discovering things, or a novel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Further Feynman
Yet another glimpse inside the mind of one of the most brilliant and most peculiar physicists of recent times, this book is perfect for those who enjoy physics or even just a good story. If you enjoyed the other semi-scientific Feynman books, you will not be disappointed by this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very different book.
In this series of lectures and interviews, Feynman lays out his, sometimes surprisingly philosophical given his aversion to such things, outlook on science, religion, and life in general. As an added bonus, you get a lecture or two on his "absurd and crazy" ideas, like nanotechnology, that give you a real feel what Feynman was about.

This book held a lot of credibility with me. First, Feynman was a singular individual, unswayed by pomposity and false pretenses, with no hidden agenda, and little desire to have other people like him - a rare thing. Second, the book is poorly written. The editors, on purpose, left it raw and unrefined, just as Feynman spoke it, to let more of Feynman come across. The result is uneven, jarring, and a little hard to read, and this, to me, is a good thing. Whenever I see fresh, sparkling, vibrant prose I don't believe it, because show me a more effective speaker than Hitler or a more electrifying call to action than the "Communist Manifesto". Without the swaying torrent of rhetoric, the message of the book stands on its own merrit.

Read this book. You'll walk away from it a little wiser.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT COLLECTION OFFERS INSIGHT INTO MAN OF SCIENCE
This book is a collection of Feynman's most memorable essays and speeches, in which he talks about the Manhattan project, his childhood, the future of physics, the unscientific nature of society, among other topics. This is a book for the non scientist, as there is very little physics required, and it talks as much about the future of science as it does about the future of society.

Feynman is a remarkable character, which many virtues and flaws which are readily detectable in the book.It is a short, quick read that left me wanting to learn more about him. ... Read more

Product Description
This collection of the best short works of rule-breaking genius Richard Feynman shows his passion for knowledge and sense of fun at their most infectious. The revealing and inspiring pieces here span a lifetime of enthusiasm for discovering what makes the world tick - including uproarious tales of early student experiments; safecracking and outwitting US censors during the Second World War; his first lecture as a graduate student (to an audience including Albert Einstein); and the memories of the father who delighted in showing him the world and sparked his insatiable curiosity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars insightful observations
Let's be clear about one thing. Most if not all of the chapters in this book have appeared in various places before. Richard Feynman has been dead 20 years, and nothing here is newly discovered material. However, it does provide an insight into a gifted mind, who was also eloquent with the written word.

One chapter has been famous in computing for decades. "There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom" was a talk he gave in the early 60s. Where he speculated that circuits could be reduced in size by orders of magnitude, with concomitant effects on performance. A foreshadowing of Gordon Moore's observation several years later, that became Moore's Law.

Another related chapter has Feynman's predictions about future computers. Future, that is, from when he made his remarks. Read it and see how accurate he was. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Live from Caltech, It's Professor Richard Feynman ! ! !
Six Wonderful Pieces! This is my first and favorite unabridged audio collection of Feyman's Lectures on Physics which he delivered during the month February in 1962 at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). These events occurred 21 months before and 21 miles away from where I was born here in Southern California! I eagerly listen to all of these tapes over & over & over again - reveling in his style of teaching (humorous, witty, and humble). Much of the quantitative eludication of subject material surpasse my comprehension. Nonetheless, I just relax during my long commute to work and absorb whatever sinks in.

My only beef with this collection is that they (Helix Books/Perseus Publishing) left out some essential lectures which, in the book, complete the overall theme (i.e. light) such as his lectures on Polarization and the one on Radiation Damping/Light Scattering. Now, I understand that each volume of these boxed sets can probably only contain a maximum of six cassettes, however they ought to publish another collection that contains the "missing" lectures mentioned above. There are plenty of his other lectures on the subject of electromagnetics from the printed volumes to be found in the other series of Audio Volumes (e.g. audio volumes 1, 2, 3, 4 & 10) however they are not quite cohesive in their contiguity (kind of scattered/clumped together).

I have a total of nine (2-10) of the twelve currently available volumes (as of July 2001). Volumes 13 and 14 are forthcoming. See my 'Listmania Lists' for a convenient place to find almost all of the available Feynman audio.

One of the cool things you can do with these audio lectures is to listen to them and then correlate them to the famous collected three volume-printed sets of the "Feynman Lectures on Physics". They relate very well in my opinion.

FYI: this set of tapes is number eight in the audio collection series and the cassettes correlate to the printed lectures in the following manner:

Cassette 1 is Volume 1, Chapter 26: The Principle of Least Time; cassette 2 is Volume 1, Chapter 27: Geometrical Optics; cassette 3 is Volume 1, Chapter 28: Electromagnetic Radiation; cassette 4 is Volume 1, Chapter 29: Interference; cassette 5 is Volume 1, Chapter 30: Diffraction; and cassette 6 is Volume 1, Chapter 31: The Origin of the Refractive Index.

My favorite quotation out of these lectures is, "And thus is the universe knit together. The atomic motions of a star still have sufficient influence at this great distance to set the electrons in our eye in motion, and so we know about the stars. If this law did not exist, we would all be literally in the dark about the exterior world!"

Collect 'em all and enjoy! Please visit my Amazon personal profile by clicking the "IndiAndy (see more about me)" link above and drop me a line. It's a real treat hearing from visitors of my reviews. ... Read more
