Product Description
Written by one of the world's leading NMR research teams, this monograph presents the most comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy available. In the course of the last two decades, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has undergone a dramatic renaissance, and the authors provide a unified review of the entire field, covering basic principles and techniques for the study of solutions and solids, with emphasis placed on methods of one- and two-dimensional spectroscopy. The material is presented in an intuitive manner, with many illustrations and a rigorous mathematical framework that should satisfy a wide audience. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The ONE required book on NMR spectroscopy!
The long and incredibly productive career of Richard Ernst could be said to have written most of this book.It is difficult to overstate his constribution to the field of NMR spectroscopy. In this seminal work, Dr. Ernst along with his co-authors andcollaborators Bodenhausen and Wokaun draw on a vast base of knowledge to describe NMR spectroscopy in a clear understandable fashion for the newest student.Yet, this volume is packed with detail to satisfy even the most strigent graduate exam. The first chapter is an introduction to operator formalism which provides the theoretical framework for the discussion NMR experiments in 1- and 2- dimensions. The subsequent chapter on 1-D FT spectroscopy contains a depth of information lacking in many other treatments. This is followed by a clear discussion of multi-quantum transitions which are explored in full in the chapters on 2-D spectroscopy. The fourth chapter on the formation of 2-D spectra is the most complete I've seen to date. It should be since Ernst and his lab did much to shape the nature of 2-D spectroscopy. This is followed by three chapters elaborating on different aspects and areas of application of 2-D NMR spectroscopy. Finally chapter 8 is dedicated to NMR imaging which was changed in no small part by Dr. Ernst's contributions. This book should be on the shelf of any professional or student whose business is to know NMR spectrscopy. Physicists, spin-engineers, and physical chemists need this book if they are to study the fundamentals of NMR spectroscopy. ... Read more

Product Description
Clearly structured, easy to read and optimal to understand, this extensive compendium fills the gap between textbooks devoted to either spectra interpretation or basic physical principles. The original Chinese editions have already sold over 18,500 copies, and the material is taken from the latest literature from around the world, plus technical information provided by the manufacturers of spectroscopic instruments.
Alongside basic methods, Professor Ning presents up-to-date developments in NMR, MS, IR and Raman spectroscopy, such as pulsed-field gradient technique, LC-NMR, and DOSY. He stresses the application of spectroscopic methods, interpreting them in great detail and depth since most of the selected spectra may be applied to practical work, as well as summarizing the rules for their interpretation. He also incorporates his original ideas, including a comparison of the common points in different spectroscopic techniques.
This monograph features a unique structure, a typical example being the discussion of 2D NMR starting from pulse sequence units, which construct various pulse sequences for related 2D NMR. A complete chapter deals with the determination of configurations and conformations of organic compounds and even biological molecules from the viewpoint of spectroscopic methodologies, while one whole section is dedicated to the interpretation of mass spectra produced by soft ionization techniques.
The principles of mass analyzers, especially the ion trap, are discussed in great depth, together with a concise summary of the MS fragmentation and rearrangement of common compounds, allowing readers to easily predict related mass spectrometric reactions. All the three kinds of library retrieval of mass spectra are presented in detail, together with recent developments in molecular vibration spectroscopy. The whole is rounded off with several appendices, including a subject index for rapid reference.
With a foreword by the Nobel prizewinner, Richard R. Ernst.

Excerpt: Carl Djerassi (born October 29, 1923 in Vienna, Austria), is an American chemist, novelist, and playwright best known for his contribution to the development of the first oral contraceptive pill (OCP). Djerassi is emeritus professor of chemistry at Stanford University. He participated in the invention in 1951, together with Mexican Luis E. Miramontes and Hungarian George Rosenkranz, of the progestin norethindronewhich, unlike progesterone, remained effective when taken orally and was far stronger than the naturally occurring hormone. His preparation was first administered as an oral contraceptive to animals by Gregory Pincus and Min Chueh Chang and to women by John Rock. Djerassi remarked that he did not have birth control in mind when he began working with progesterone "not in our wildest dreams did we imagine (it)". He is also the author of several novels in the "science-in-fiction" genre, including Cantor's Dilemma, in which he explores the ethics of modern scientific research through his protagonist, Dr. Cantor. Excerpt: Norman Ernest Borlaug (March 25, 1914 September 12, 2009) was an American agronomist, humanitarian, and Nobel laureate who has been called "the father of the Green Revolution". Borlaug was one of only six people to have won the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. He was also a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honor. Borlaug received his Ph.D. in plant pathology and genetics from the University of Minnesota in 1942. He took up an agricultural research position in Mexico, where he developed semi-dwarf, high-yield, disease-resistant wheat varieties. During the mid-20th century, Borlaug led the introduction of these high-yielding varieties combined with modern agricultural production techniques to Mexico, Pakistan, and India. As a result, Mexico became a net exporter of wheat by 1963. Between 1965 and 1970, wheat yields nearly doubled in Pakistan and India, greatly improving the food security in those nations. These collective increases in yield have been labeled the Green Revolution, and Borlaug is often credited with saving over a billion people worldwide from starvation. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 in recognition of his contributions to world peace through increasing food supply. Auszug: Richard Robert Ernst (born August 14, 1933) is a Swiss physical chemist and Nobel Laureate. Born in Winterthur, Switzerland, Ernst was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1991 for his contributions towards the development of Fourier Transform nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy while at Varian Associates, Palo Alto and the subsequent development of multi-dimensional NMR techniques. These underpin applications of NMR both to chemistry (NMR spectroscopy) and to medicine (MRI).He also received Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize in 1991. He studied at and served on the faculty of the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (Federal Institute of Technology) in Zürich, Switzerland from which he is now retired. He is Honorary Doctor of the Technical University of Munich and University of Zurich. He is member of the World Knowledge Dialogue Scientific Board. Ernst received both his diploma in chemistry (1957) and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry (1962) from the Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich. From 1963 to 1968 he worked as a research chemist in Palo Alto, Calif. In 1966, working with an American colleague, Ernst discovered that the sensitivity of NMR techniques (hitherto limited to analysis of only a few nuclei) could be dramatically increased by replacing the slow, sweeping radio waves traditionally used in NMR spectroscopy with short, intense pulses. His discovery enabled analysis of a great many more types of nuclei and smaller amounts of materials. In 1968 he returned to Switzerland to teach at his alma mater. He was made assistant professor in 1970 and full professor in 1976. His second major c...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

These collective increases in yield have been labeled the Green Revolution, and Borlaug is often credited with saving over a billion people worldwide from starvation. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 in recognition of his contributions to world peace through increasing food supply.
