Issu d'une riche famille de Nancy, son père Roger Lang est le directeur commercial de l'entreprise familiale fondée et dirigée par le grand-père de Jack, Albert. Jack Lang a été très tôt attiré par la scène théâtrale. C'est du reste dans sa troupe de théâtre qu'il fait connaissance de Monique Buczynski qu'il épousera le 13 mars 1961. Il est le père de la comédienne Valérie Lang. Il présida également le festival de théâtre de Nancy de 1963 à 1977. Ancien élève de Institut d'études politiques de Paris, il est docteur et agrégé de droit public et sciences politiques. Il est élu le 16 janvier 2008, président de l'Institut mémoires de l'édition contemporaine (IMEC). Étudiant en droit à Nancy en parallèle de Sciences Po Paris, et passionné de théâtre, Jack Lang crée en 1963 le festival de théâtre universitaire de Nancy, qu'il préside jusqu'en 1977. La première année, il interprète le rôle-titre de Caligula. Mais rapidement, l'évènement dépasse la sphère artistique lorraine, pour acquérir une réputation nationale et mondiale, qui accueille notamment Roland Grünberg, le Bread and Puppet Theatre et Bob Wilson. Business His father was part owner of an emigration agency that arranged passages to the United States , and when he died in 1874, young Albert took over the business. He developed it into an independent shipping line, saving costs by carrying cargo on the return trip from the US. This brought him to the attention of Hamburg America Line , who hired him in 1886, and made him general director in 1899.
