Gli elementi della composizione sono disegnati con contorni netti. C'è una scena di schietta vita paesana: il borgo da cui escono gli odori. Nell'ultima immagine ("stormi d'uccelli neri") possiamo rinvenire una nota malinconica, un'ombra di tedio. Nessuna sbavatura sentimentale, un uso dei colori limitato, senza sfumature

Il paesaggio viene recuperato dalla memoria, filtrato da una nota di malinconia, rievocato dall'infanzia

Pianto antico
Componimento scritto per commemorare la morte del figlioletto Dante. Il pianto è antico, perché si ripete, è antico come il mondo, il pianto di chi ha perso una persona cara. Da una parte emerge la vicenda naturale (la primavera che ritorna), dall'altra l'irrevocabilità della morte. Contrapposizione vita- morte, luce-buio.

Il comune rustico
Paesaggio di tipo storico. Per Carducci solo nel passato si rinviene il bello. Egli è in perenne polemica col presente in cui vive. Egli fa ritorno al Medioevo, in particolare alla lotta dei comuni contro l'Impero, epoca in cui l'Italia ha scritto una gloriosa pagina di storia. Il paesaggio è dominato dal sole, che riflette una concezione, appunto, solare della vita, chiara energica luminosa. Carducci, deluso dai problemi del presente ricerca nel passato i grandi valori, i grandi ideali.
Nell'atto di lasciare un paesaggio caro della Carnia, il Carducci saluta quei luoghi e rievoca le lontane stagioni del Medioevo, quando, sotto i noci della Carnia, si adunavano gli uomini dei primi comuni rurali e gettavano le basi dei loro ordinamenti. Il comune rustico celebra la formazione spontanea di quei primi nuclei di vita civile (un esempio di democrazia diretta) in mezzo alla barbarie.
