Product Description
What does it mean to be a conscientious American citizen in these times?

In 2005, as hundreds of prisoners marked their third year of detention at Guantanamo with hunger strikes, a small group of friends were moved to begin fasting one day a week in solidarity with the detainees. A few months later, 25 traveled to Cuba and walked from Santiago de Cuba to Guantanamo in an effort to visit the prisoners and appeal to the humanity of their captors. That first Witness Against Torture vigil at the gates of an American gulag on Cuban soil captured the world s attention.

This book is the story of Witness Against Torture s campaign to close Guantanamo and end torture. It charts the efforts of thousands of American citizens, ordinary people who have confronted that question what does it mean to be a conscientious American? squarely and thoughtfully. It presents the writings of the detainees and their lawyers, the pleas for an end to cruelty and for the restoration of habeas corpus. And it chronicles the actions required when those pleas fell on deaf ears in the nation s corridors of power: the marches, street theater, civil disobedience, and jailings as Witness brought the campaign directly to the White House, the Supreme Court, the Congress, the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, and to parks and street corners across the country.

Witness Against Torture brings to life a campaign that - in the best traditions of the abolitionist, civil rights, and peace movements - has exposed cruelty and injustice and demanded that America live up to its calling. As Witness enters what it hopes will be its final chapter, the 100 Days Campaign to Close Guantanamo, this book serves as a reminder of what ordinary citizens have done to save the soul of the nation.

The book includes an accompanying DVD with six short films of various Witness actions, including the march to Guantanamo.

Both book and DVD would be ideal for classroom use in college and high school courses in peace studies, social movements, international relations, and political science.

The Book includes Forewords from Daniel Berrigan, S.J. and Michael Ratner (president of the Center for Constitutional Rights) ... Read more

From the author: Objective: Although much research has explored the relation of substance-use norms to substance use among college students, much less research has focused on employed adults and the workplace as a social context for social norms regarding substance use. This study explored the relation of descriptive and injunctive workplace substance-use norms regarding alcohol and illicit drug use to employee substance use. Both alcohol use and illicit drug use were explored, as well as overall and context-specific use and impairment. Method: Data were collected from a national probability sample of 2,430 employed adults (55% female) using a random-digit-dial telephone survey. Overall employee alcohol and illicit drug use were assessed, as well as use before work, use and impairment during the workday, and use after work. Results: After controlling for a number of potential covariates, injunctive norms regarding workplace alcohol and illicit drug use predicted substance use and impairment overall and across all contexts of use. Descriptive norms predicted alcohol and illicit drug use before and during work, as well as workplace impairment. Conclusions: This study shows that both workplace injunctive and descriptive norms are important predictors of substance use in the U.S. workforce. There were two general patterns, however, that were consistent across both alcohol and illicit drug use. Social norms marketing campaigns, therefore, may be a useful way for employers to target employee substance use. The present results also helped to integrate the results of several prior studies that employed narrower samples and measures. (J. Stud. Alcohol Drugs, 71, 526-534, 2010)

Product Description

This insightful volume considers how to locate America in the sporting world: in the traditions and rituals of a national pastime or in the baseball academies run by American professional teams in the Dominican Republic? With the athletes that carry a flag in Olympic ceremonies or among the executives in the boardrooms of Nike? The contributors argue that 'America' is located in these familiar sites and practices but also and increasingly in these novel contexts, where the bodies, strategies, and aspirations of others are becoming subject to American ludic, agonistic, and moral orders. Collectively, their contention is that American sports as a category needs to be reconsidered, to take into account the extensive networks of expertise, finance, and performance moving out from American athletic institutions as well as the ever increasing influx of talent coming from abroad that sustains American collegiate and professional athletics.

As America strives to balance cosmopolitan objectives with resurgent nationalism, it is critical to consider 'American sports' from within and without. This book will be of great interest to scholars of culture, politics, and sport.

This book was published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.

The authors of this commentary take a canonical-historical approach to the books of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth, three books that are diverse, yet share the common historical context of the tribal settlement of Canaan. They examine Joshua, Judges, and Ruth as narratives with dynamic theological messages about the dynamic relationship between God's people and the powerful God who gives land and provides deliverers for the people. ... Product Description
In this project researchers developed a practical, low-cost chemical analyzer for real-time monitoring of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) in drinking water distribution systems. THMs and HAAs are possibly harmful to humans if ingested. For this reason the US Environmental Protection Agency established maximum contaminant levels. Future regulations might lower the MCL of these substances. Real-time monitoring of THMs and HAAs will become necessary for future regulatory compliance.  ... Read more

From the introduction by John S. Hagelin: "This special issue will investigate the crucial subject of higher states of consciousness...and the application of the development of consciousness to all areas of society. It is dedicated to Dr. Charles N. Alexander...whose research transformed our understanding of this important field...In the 1970s, neuroscientists at Harvard, Stanford, and UCLA Medical School reported the first consciousness beyond waking, dreaming, and sleeping...The next three decades saw an explosion in scientific research on this fourth state of consciousness....[it has had ] profound practical repercussions for the individual and society.... much of this research has focused on a simple, nonreligious method for directly experiencing pure consciousness, known as Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique...Today, the TM technique is widely practiced throughout the world, with millions of participants ranging in experience from several months to almost 40 years. The highly systematic manner in which it is taught, the widespread availability of participants, and the extensive body of related research have made this technique an ideal investigative tool for modern psychological research. The most critical findings of more than thirty years of scientific investigation into higher states of consciousness are contained or reviewed in this issue. Taken together, this body of research constitutes a scientific discovery of the foremost magnitude. It changes completely our understanding of consciousness and the limits of human potential... is the most comprehensive and definitive work to date on higher states of consciousness. It is essential reading for scholars and for seekers of truth."This book covers Applications of Maharishi Vedic Science to Developmental Psychology, Health and Aging, Business Management, Collective Consciousness and Peace, Public Policy, and New Health-Related Applications. ... Product Description
Emergency physicians assess and manage a wide variety of problems from patients presenting with a diversity of severities, ranging from mild to severe and life-threatening. They are expected to maintain their competency and expertise in areas where there is rapid knowledge change.

Evidence-based Emergency Medicine is the first book of its kind in emergency medicine to tackle the problems practicing physicians encounter in the emergency setting using an evidence-based approach. It summarizes the published evidence available for the diagnosis and treatment of common emergency health care problems in adults. Each chapter contextualizes a topic area using a clinical vignette and generates a series of key clinically important diagnostic and treatment questions. By completing detailed reviews of diagnostic and treatment research, using evidence from systematic reviews, RCTs, and prospective observational studies, the authors provide conclusions and practical recommendations.

Focusing primarily on diagnosis in areas where evidence for treatment is well accepted (e.g. DVTs), and treatment in other diseases where diagnosis is not complex (e.g. asthma), this text is written by leading emergency physicians at the forefront of evidence-based medicine. Evidence-based Emergency Medicine is ideal for emergency physicians and trainees, emergency department staff, and family physicians specialising in the acute care of medical and injured patients. ...
