Product Description

Poetic Affairs deals with the complex and fascinating interface between literature and life through the prism of the lives and works of three outstanding poets: the German-Jewish poet and Holocaust survivor, Paul Celan (1920–1970); the Leningrad native, U.S. poet laureate, and Nobel Prize winner, Joseph Brodsky (1940–1996); and Germany's premier contemporary poet, Durs Grünbein (born 1962). Focusing on their poetic dialogues with such interlocutors as Shakespeare, Seneca, and Byron, respectively—veritable love affairs unfolding in and through poetry—Eskin offers unprecedented readings of Celan's, Brodsky's, and Grünbein's lives and works and discloses the ways in which poetry articulates and remains faithful to the manifold "truths"—historical, political, poetic, erotic—determining human existence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandelstam scene
I love this book and I wish there were more critics capable of what Michael Eskin has accomplished here. Eskin finds that affairs in life and with words bind these poets together, though on the surface they would seem to share little. Celan is read through his translations of Shakespeare's sonnets and in the light of an unfair persecution for plagiarism; a charge that seemed to cast shadows over the last two decades of his life. Grunbein is read as a love poet whose affair is that of L. Annaeus Seneca's banishment. This Grunbein chapter is the highlight of the book for me, as Eskin's reading of the poem "Julia Livilla" is nothing short of spellbinding. Brodsky is read through his relationship to Byron's poetry and with attention given to the circumstances of Brodsky's exile and tempestuous love affairs. The first chapter establishes the terms of emphasis in Eskin's undertaking, and in this section the language grows occasionally turgid as he navigates the waters of modern philosophy for assistance setting up what he means by affair, interlocution, fidelity and event. The final chapter brings the three writers even closer together through an evaluation of them as readers of Osip Mandelstam's essay on Dante.

With the attention to the lives and words of these three poets Eskin brings about a delicate, creative and intricate way of reading poetry and relating poets that informs beyond the level of intertextual relations, revisionary readings, and ideological poetics. I stand impressed, inspired and grateful for this mighty book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Collection
I have several other Joplin books and this particular one is very comprehensive.I don't think this is being published any longer so you may need to buy a used copy.I bought one used and had the old, dried up glued binding replaced with spiral binding. Now it's just as good as new and it's for sure my favorite. What's also nice is you get to see what the original covers look like to the songs. If you enjoy Scott Joplin music, you need this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love works of Joplin, get this book.
This book is a complete and precise collection of Scott Joplin's works. The book also gives a summary of the composers lifetime.

I highlyrecommend this book. ... Read more

Excerpt: Seamus Heaney (born 13 April 1939, pronounced ) is an Irish poet, writer and lecturer who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1995 and the T. S. Eliot Prize in 2006. He currently lives in Dublin. Heaney was born on 13 April 1939 at the family farmhouse called Mossbawn, between Castledawson and Toomebridge in Northern Ireland; he was the first of nine children. In 1953, his family moved to Bellaghy, a few miles away, which is now the family home. His father, Patrick Heaney, a local of Castledawson, was the eighth child of ten born to James and Sarah Heaney. Patrick was a farmer but his real commitment was to cattle-dealing, to which he was introduced by the uncles who had cared for him after the early death of his own parents. Heaney's mother came from the McCann family, whose uncles and relations were employed in the local linen mill and whose aunt had worked as a maid for the mill owner's family. The poet has commented on the fact that his parentage thus contains both the Ireland of the cattle-herding Gaelic past and the Ulster of the Industrial Revolution; he considers this to have been a significant tension in his background. Heaney initially attended Anahorish Primary School and when he was twelve-years-old, he won a scholarship to St. Columb's College, a Catholic boarding school situated in Derry. Heaney's brother, Christopher, was killed in a road accident at the ag...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=50920 ... Read more

From the supplier: Joseph Brodsky is being heralded as the greatest Russian poet to emerge after World War II. Several events were held in his native city of St. Petersburg to celebrate what would have been his 56th birthday in the summer of 1996. Some came to give praise to the Russian-born poet while others attended to criticize him. These events demonstrate how his status is being negotiated in the public arena for the first time after years of private or clandestine assessment of his works.

Excerpt: Iosif Aleksandrovich Brodsky (Russian: ) (24 May 1940 28 January 1996) was a Soviet-Russian-American poet, essayist, and Nobel Laureate in Literature. He was appointed Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1991. Brodsky was born into a Jewish family in Leningrad. His father was a professional photographer in the Soviet Navy and also published photos in papers and magazines. His mother was a professional interpreter. In early childhood Brodsky survived the Siege of Leningrad when he and his parents nearly died of starvation, and later he suffered from various health problems caused by the siege. When he was fifteen, Brodsky left school and tried to enter the School of Submariners without success. He went on to work as a milling machine operator. Later, having decided to become a physician, he worked at the morgue at the Kresty prison. He subsequently held a variety of jobs at a hospital, in a ship's boiler room, and on geological expeditions. At the same time, Brodsky engaged in a program of self-education. He learned English and Polish (mainly to translate poems by Czesaw Miosz, who was Brodsky's favorite poet and a friend), and acquired a deep interest in classical philosophy, religion, mythology, and English and American poetry. Brodsky began writing his own poetry and producing literary translations around 1957. His writings were apolitical. The young Brodsky ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=262593 ... Read more
