2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and factual, but essentially useless for study
I am currently using this textbook for my AP United States History class. While it is definetly factual and a good general knowledge book for people interested in History, it's difficult to study from. The wording is noteasy and often gets extremely flowery. Also, the text focuses on specificincidences and doesn't cover concepts very deeply, if at all. I often findthat I'm left to draw my own conclusions from it and then I have to go toother sources for the information I need for tests.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thuroughly written, informative, but confusing
This book provides a complete description of US History. All theimportaint facts are covered in the book, but not any more in depth than aparagraph or two on a subject.Occasionally, though, the text does becomedifficult to follow. Topics aren't presented cronoligically, but insteadare grouped together in a approximate time span.IE.. The culture of theUnited Stated in the 1860s and 1870s was discussed before there was anymention at all about the Civil War.However, the high level of knowledgethat can be gained by treading this book in its straight forward approachfar outweigh any problems that may be encountered. ... Product Description

This challenging and motivating text presents the experience of the U.S. in World War II as a backdrop for understanding recent developments and events in American history. Four principal interwoven themes trace 1) the pervasive impact of the Cold War, 2) the effects of social-protest movements among African-Americans, women, and other groups, 3) the sources and impact of economic, demographic, and cultural changes, and 4) a thorough examination of politics.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
The book came in pretty good condition. I did not expect great condition because that was not in the product description.I got a "good" condition book for a good price.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
Paul Boyer's "Promises To Keep" is an excellent textbook for the post-World War II society. He has references to important films, art works, and books throughout.

4-0 out of 5 stars Over-Priced, Publisher Needs Spanking
I spend $5000 a year at Amazon.I also publish books and know that it costs a penny a page to publish a book with a hard copy jacket.

This is an important book, disgracefully priced beyond the reach of virtually everyone who actually needs to read it.

If and when the price drops to $35 or so, I will consider buying. If you agree, please join me in protest.

3-0 out of 5 stars Revisionist?
I'm an older student, so old that the word "revisionist" was never applied to history. History was simply facts, dates, names, etc. Dull? Yes, but it was up to our professors to make those facts interesting - not the textbook.
I was struck by a line in Paul Boyer's Preface: "This, then is not an authoritive, predigested, take-it-or-leave-it version of recent U. S. history but one PERSPECTIVE on that history presented in a way that I hope will stimulate discussion and reflection."
We already must purchase a book that gives differing slants on modern problems that is to be used to supplement Boyer and provide PERSPECTIVE. Which book do I believe to be stating the truth? If I want PERSPECTIVE I'll ask my professor. I simply want a presentation of facts not an editorial wrapped up like facts.
I can see it'll be a long semester.

5-0 out of 5 stars A non-history major undergraduate's thoughts
This is an excellent textbook for courses on US history 1945-present.It covered all topics, from the civil rights movement to Iran-Contra, thoroughly and provided many supporting details. While concentrating onthe high profile movements such as civil rights, the women's movement, andlater the New Right, the author also traces Hispanic and American Indianmovements and briefly touches on the Gay Rights Movement. His politicalcommentary is somewhat liberal, especially in discussions on the mostrecent presidents, but his views do not significantly interfere with thefacts he presents.Overall, it is an extremely well-written, in-depthanalysis of political and social trends, and is a great resource forstudents. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Too Biased...
I've never read a more slanted view of American history. It makes absolutely no attempt to remain neutral.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got the book on time and i saved lots of money buy ordering online!
Very cheap and half the price then buying from any book store and seller send the book on time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read me a story
This book is a joy to read because the text flows in such a way that one would think he was reading the History Channel. While that may seem terrible to some, the book draws not just on secondary sources with a "hindsight" attitude toward the subject matter, but rather engages the reader by reflecting on primary sources, on individual stories while still giving the bigger picture. The incorporation of culural history is one of the main reasons I enjoyed this text, but I also liked how modern finds about certain events (such as the spainish american war) were given alongside the popular thought of the day.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book, But Expensive and Difficult in High School
I used the third edition of this book, it was only one volume covering from clonial age to the first election of Clinton. This was the book assigned to my high school and AP history class (my setup was weird 4 periods a week of standard High School history, and 2 a week of AP level history). This book prepared me really well for the AP US Exam, while I have not yet received my score, I am very confident I knew the material well. This book also really helped me for the SAT Subject Test: US History, on which I scored a 96th percentile 780.While this book is good for intense history courses, I believe it is too hard for a standard high school level US History course. This is because it covers too much material for that type of class. This book is very well written, and at times can often be interesting to read, what other text books can say that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read
I read this book for my history class for UMUC (DE) while in the UK (military)and i have really enjoyed it.
The book is easy to read and understand and i definately would recomend it. It is not a bad book for the money either. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Enduring vision
It is a lengthy, cruel but necessary book. For the author it is perpetual income off the backs of innocent teenagers just trying to get into college.

2-0 out of 5 stars slow expedited shipping
I paid extra to have the book shipped to me quickly--the seller posted expedited shipping usually ships out in the next 24 hours.According to the original estimate it meant I could get it within 7 days--2-3 working days. After I paid for it and a few days had passed and I noticed it hadn't shipped YET the NEW ETA was 2 weeks out! What? The book is in fine condition but I ended up buying new locally since the book was not arriving as originally stated.Beware if you need something from this seller right away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enduring Vision 4th Edition Concise
Excellent text!Have been using it for 6 years in my AP US History classes.I personnaly do not feel that the authors are biased against Republicans, but then again we are teaching history!Well written and presented!

3-0 out of 5 stars Well laid-out reader, but needs more objectivity
This is a good general history of the United States, however it too often offers you only a one-sided viewpoint. This book presents problems from a blame America viewpoint too often, including nearly blaming primarily the US for World Wars I and II.It seems too often, and conveniently, important data was left out to lead readers to believe the half-truths contained within.

The inside of the book is quite colorful and easy to read. The layout was well thought through and contains well laid-out information on a broad variety of subjects. As a general reader, I found it quite good in most areas of history. The only part of this history I found lacking was in the more controversial areas, where only one viewpoint was offered and seemed to be the only one accepted.

As the book gets to more modern history, the reader is left no doubt that Reagan was an evil and deceptive man, and Clinton was the saviour of the US people. While some agree with this viewpoint, the authors only present this viewpoint and none other.A look into the author's backgrounds should provide any objective reader information on where the authors were coming from and why they feel this way.I personally like seeing different views of history, and to do this I recommend buying the accompanying document sets and essay sets - they contain different analysis.

This book does present some historical events from both sides, however it too often represents a one sided opinion or presents only half of the story.Even though the reason could be it is a condensed history, it is an unfortunate possibility that certain information was left out in the interest of bias.

As a teacher I had once said, you pay your money and pick your views... there are many different interpretations of the same information in history.I prefer seeing more than one viewpoint in a general history reader.

Product Description
THE ENDURING VISION'S engaging narrative integrates political, social, and cultural history within a chronological framework. Known for its focus on the environment and the land, the text is also praised for its innovative coverage of cultural history, public health and medicine, and the West--including Native American history. The 7th Edition brings the work fully up-to-date, and was revised line-by-line to create a sharper narrative. A new feature, called "Going to the Source," is a one page excerpt of a primary source. These appear throughout each chapter with analysis questions to serve as review. Chapters 26-29 have been reorganized to consolidate coverage of the Cold War, the civil rights movement, and the Vietnam War, so that each is addressed cohesively. ... Read more
