The magazine's report, featured in its March issue, listed the nation's 357 top cardiologists, neurologists and other heart and stroke specialists for both adults and children. Included on the list were Joseph Alpert, Jack Copeland, Bruce Coull, Gordon Ewy and William Feinberg, all medical doctors who practice at the Arizona Health Sciences Center and University Medical Center. Doctors were chosen by 260 department chairs and section chiefs in related fields at major medical centers throughout the nation. They were asked over the telephone which doctors provide the most expert treatment and were instructed not to recommend physicians at their own institutions. UA administrator considered for university president spot Martha Gilliland, senior vice provost and vice president for Academic Affairs and Human Resources at the UA, is one of four candidates being considered for the presidency of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. The next president of the Virginia liberal arts university will be chosen from a field of four candidates by the end of March.

By the end of the 1992 summit, 425 scientists and other intellectual leaders had signed the appeal. Since then, word of mouth has prompted thousands more scientists to lend their support. Today, more than 4,000 signatories, from over 100 countries have signed it, including more than 70 Nobel Prize winners. In spite of this spontaneous and growing support from the world's scientific community, the Heidelberg Appeal has received very little media attention. Neither a statement of corporate interests nor a denial of environmental problems, the Heidelberg Appeal is a quiet call for reason and a recognition of scientific progress as the solution to, not the cause of, the health and environmental problems that we face. The appeal expresses a conviction that modern society is the best equipped in human history to solve the world's ills, provided that they do not sacrifice science, intellectual honesty and common sense to political opportunism and irrational fears. We want to make our full contribution to the preservation of our common heritage, the Earth.

Contact me Canadian Nobel Laureates This is the time of year when the Nobel Prizes for science are awarded, and while there haven't been any Canadian winners this year, for a small country, Canada has been well represented in the awards in the past few yearsand can lay claim to one of the most important discoveries in medicine earlier this century. And within Canada, Saskatchewan is also well-represented for its size among these prestigious awards. A search of the Nobel Prizes' Web site (www.nobel.se) for the word Canada turns up more than 90 entries. In all, 10 Nobel Laureates are Canadian or are closely identified with Canada; many more studied, grew up or taught here in the course of careers that may have taken them all over the world. Just two years later in 1983, Henry Taube, whom the Nobel committee called "one of the most creative contemporary workers in inorganic chemistry," won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Putatively, it was for "his work on the mechanisms of electron transfer reactions, especially in metal complexes," which sounds rather esoteric, but has practical use in many fieldseven biochemistry, where his discoveries are playing an important role in the study of respiration.. In any event, as one of his nominators pointed out, Taube has made at least 18 major discoveries in chemistry.

Extractions: 13 May 1996 One year on, over 1,000 support May 15, 1995 Tolerance Petition; two original signatories remain in detention One year after the release of a petition calling on the Chinese government to mark the United Nations' Year of Tolerance by releasing political prisoners and instituting a climate of political tolerance and dialogue, two of the 45 original signatories, Wang Dan and Liu Nianchun, are in incommunicado detention while a total of nine were detained during the course of the year for their involvement in this and other peaceful protest activities. Many of the signatories were harassed or put under house arrest for signing the petition, while at least one individual was fired from her job. Original petition signers Wang Dan, a former 1989 student leader, and Liu Nianchun, a veteran labor and human rights activist, are still being held incommunicado without charge one year after being taken from their homes by police. Despite repeated appeals to the Chinese authorities and the international community, their families have been unable to obtain any information on their whereabouts or the reasons they continue to be detained. In response to media questions, the authorities have recently stated that Wang Dan is "in Beijing" while both are said to be held under "residential surveillance" (jianshe juzhu), a measure which a range of authoritative Chinese legal sources, including a Supreme People's Court judge, have stated is intended to be a form of house arrest.

Extractions: Processing Visual Information It is estimated that the human brain contains 100 billion (10 ) neurons averaging 1000 synapses on each; that is, some 10 connections. How to unravel the workings of such a complex system? Progress has been slow, but a solid start has been made in determining how the brain processes information reaching it from the eyes . The visual receptors, rods and cones , synapse in the retina with several types of interneurons , e.g., bipolar cells These, in turn, synapse with ganglion cells The axons of ganglion cells make up the optic nerve and conduct impulses to the brain. But each receptor does not have its own private circuit back to the brain. There are some 10 rods and cones in each eye, but only 10 ganglion cell axons in the optic nerve.
