In 1947, Mr. Cary was directing the efforts of the American Friends Service Committee to clean up and rebuild war-torn Europe when the committee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Five years ago, he recounted in a newspaper article how he and a group of workers learned of the award while they were in Amsterdam. "We were tired and overwhelmed and stressed terribly," he said. "We were having to make the decision who got fed and who didn't... . A Dutch Quaker came in with a newspaper that said 'Quakers Win Nobel Peace Prize.' " "We were all stunned into silence," he said. The prize was awarded to the Religious Society of Friends for the humanitarian work done by the American Friends Service Committee in Europe.

WIB member Lucy Nichol of Montpelier said she was surprised and honored the organization had been nominated for the peace prize. She was one of about 50 women who held vigils before and during the war in Afghanistan following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and have also actively supported other causes like the women’s movements in Israel and Palestine. “I knew Women in Black had been nominated, but I didn’t know they were nominated by the American Friends Service Committee,” she said. “I certainly feel that it’s well deserved, particularly for the women in Israel. “For about 17 years, they have been out protesting the intervention of their government in Palestinian land and urging that Israeli settlements be disbanded. They’re very courageous women. They’ve had to face hostilities in their communities and towards their families, and have been out there demonstrating all these years. “When we had a demonstration in Montpelier, we had a vigil at the Statehouse and it was very effective. It brings another dimension and aspect to war in this country. So I think it’s wonderful that women who are bringing issues to the fore are being recognized,” she added.

    Extractions: In 1947, the Religious Society of Friends was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. The Prize was awarded, for the first time, to an organization, rather than to an individual, when it was presented to Friends in recognition of a public stand for peace that is unfailing. However, there were some questions about who would accept such an award on behalf of Friends. The question was resolved by awarding the Prize jointly to the British Friends Service Council and the American Friends Service Committee. Both of these organizations had been set up by Friends specifically to address the need for comfort during a time of war. The following excerpts are from a book that details the life of the Friend most responsible for setting up the American Friends Service Committee - Rufus Jones . One of his closest aides was D. Robert Yarnall From David Hinshaw, "Rufus Jones: Master Quaker", G.P. Putnam's Sons New York, 1951 pg 286. "Friends now had an opportunity to prove to themselves and the Christian world that their testimony against war and the hatred engendered by nationalism was more than a negative attitude, that it had its root in a belief in the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man, that a constructive faith led to constructive ends. "In 1917 Rufus M. Jones rallied around himself a small group of young Friends in the Haverford College campus, where their training for relief service abroad began. Our generation has become accustomed to think of the American Friends Service Committee as a well established and most respectable organization of international standing. But this beginning at Haverford was small, and its future seemed quite insecure. Rufus Jones had to struggle with the military authorities to have it recognized as a service alternative to military duties. Slowly, and through the unselfish devotion of the participants, it established itself abroad and at home. The story of its courage and success is well known... By the grace of historic justice Rufus Jones was able to experience its crowning recognition in 1947, when the NOBEL PRIZE FOR PEACE was awarded to the London Yearly Meeting's Service Council and the American Friends Service Committee in the United States.

It is now three hundred years since George Fox established the Society of Friends. It was during the time of civil war in England, a period full of the religious and political strife which led to the Protectorate under Cromwell - today we would no doubt call it a dictatorship. What then happened was what so often happens when a political or religious movement is successful; it lost sight of its original concern: the right to freedom. For, having achieved power, the movement then refuses to grant to others the things for which it has itself fought. Such was the case with the Presbyterians and after them with the Independents. It was not the spirit of tolerance and humanity that emerged victorious. George Fox and many of his followers were to experience this during the ensuing years, but they did not take up the fight by arming, as men customarily do. They went their way quietly because they were opposed to all forms of violence. They believed that spiritual weapons would prevail in the long run - a belief born of inward experience. They emphasized life itself rather than its forms because forms, theories, and dogmas have never been of importance to them. They have therefore from the very beginning been a community without fixed organization. This has given them an inner strength and a freer view of mankind, a greater tolerance toward others than is found in most organized religious communities.
