Isä oli Liestalin piirissä kantoninhallinnon esimies ja hän luki myöhemmin tuomariksi lisäansioita saadakseen. Avioparilla oli kaksi nuorempaa poikaa, joista jälkimmäinen kuoli pienenä. Kouluikäisenä Carl Spitteler harrasti piirtämistä ja maalaamista sekä musiikkia, mutta myös tanssia, ulkoilua, voimistelua ja urheilua. Kolmentoista vanhana hän oli ensimmäisen kerran tutustunut merkittäviin runoilijoihin ja samoihin aikoihin hän kiinnostui antiikin Kreikan taruista. Ne sytyttivät hänessä pitkään piilossa pysyneen haaveen tulla runoilijaksi. Sammumaton kiinnostus runouteen oli käynnistäjänä hänen kirjailijanuransa suurille teoksille. Spitteler teki päätöksen runoilijaksi ryhtymisestä vuonna 1862, mutta piti kirjoituksensa toistaiseksi salassa. Jo viimeisinä kouluvuosinaan hän suunnitteli runoelman kirjoittamista Saulista, mutta siitä hän kuitenkin luopui vuonna 1865. Vaikean ja myrskyisenkin murrosiän jälkeen Spitteler alkoi isänsä toivomuksesta lukea lakia vuonna 1863. Jo parin lukukauden jälkeen hän siirtyi opiskelemaan jumaluusoppia ja suoritti toukokuussa 1871 pappistutkinnon. Spitteler kuitenkin epäili vakaumuksena aitoutta ja haaveet runoilijaksi antautumisesta pääsivät voitolle. Kaksi ensimmäistä teostaan hän julkaisi salanimellä Carl Felix Tandem.
