Extractions: To Senators of the 106th Congress: We urge you to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. The United States signed and ratified the Limited Test Ban Treaty in 1963. In the years since, the nation has played a leadership role in actions to reduce nuclear risks, including the Non-Proliferation Treaty extension, the ABM Treaty, STARTs I and II, and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty negotiations. Fully informed technical studies have concluded that continued nuclear testing is not required to retain confidence in the safety, reliability and performance of nuclear weapons in the United States stockpile, provided science and technology programs necessary for stockpile stewardship are maintained. The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty is central to future efforts to halt the spread of nuclear weapons. Ratification of the Treaty will mark an important advance in uniting the world in an effort to contain and reduce the dangers of nuclear arms. It is imperative that the CTBT be ratified.

Extractions: The Nobel Prize in Physics The Nobel Prize is the first international award given yearly since 1901 for achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. The prize consists of a medal, a personal diploma, and a prize amount. In 1968, the Sveriges Riksbank (Bank of Sweden) instituted the Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize. In the beginning, more than three prize winners could share a Nobel Prize, although this was never practiced. Paragraph four of the Statutes of the Nobel Foundation was amended in 1968, restricting the number of prizewinners to only three. Physics is one of the five prize areas mentioned in Alfred Nobel's will. The will was, however, partly incomplete. Nobel simply stated that prizes be given to those who, during the preceding year, "shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" and that one part be given to the person who "shall have made the most important discovery or invention within the field of physics." The Nobel Prizes Awarded to The prize is being awarded with one half jointly to: ZHORES I. ALFEROV

Extractions: CAMBRIDGE One of the first researchers to find a peaceful use for nuclear power, Clifford G. Shull of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will share this year's Nobel Prize in physics for discoveries so basic that some colleagues had feared his accomplishment was being taken for granted. During the first decade after World War II, Shull, 79, harnessed the shower of neutrons produced in a nuclear reaction to analyze the atomic structure of solids and liquids. Shull's neutron scattering technique paved the way for a host of modern discoveries, from plastics to better computer memories to biological tests. "I'm really happy they finally discovered his work. With something as fundamental as this, it's easy to forget who discovered it," said a Nobel laureate, Jerome I. Friedman of MIT, who, along with MIT's dean of science, Robert J. Birgeneau, nominated Shull for the physics prize this year. Also yesterday, the Swedish academy of science announced that University of Southern California scientist George Olah has won the 1994 Nobel Prize in chemistry.
