Here is his autobiography the extraordinary story of a modest Swedish American who never strayed from his strong basic commitments throughout an illustrious career that brought him well-deserved national and international fame. Seaborg's story begins in Michigan in 1912 with his Scandinavian parents, but shifts quickly to California, where he got himself an education he didn't think he could afford during the dark days of the Depression. During World War II, the young Berkeley-trained chemist led the Manhattan Project group that devised the chemical extraction processes producing plutonium 239. Seaborg's assessment of the long-term consequences of this work is especially important. Seaborg also recounts the postwar drama of his scientific discoveries, notably his pioneering work on the many transuranium elements he co-discovered at the Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley work that earned him the Nobel Prize in 1951. Then, as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission under President Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon, Seaborg not only led the vast federal agency during difficult years but fought for a nuclear test ban treaty and argued in favor of the peaceful use of international control of atomic energy.

The internationally renowned chemist and educator had suffered a stroke on August 24, 1998, while in Boston for the national meeting of the American Chemical Society. At the meeting, Seaborg was named one of the "Top 75 Distinguished Contributors to the Chemical Enterprise." Seaborg had a life-long association with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab). Commenting on Seaborg's death, Berkeley Lab Director Charles Shank said, "Dr. Seaborg was a true giant of the 20th Century, a legend in the annals of scientific discovery. At the age of 14, he began the practice of keeping a daily journal, which he continued for the rest of his life. It was not until he reached Jordan High School that his interest in chemistry was stimulated by the enthusiasm of a teacher, and, in September of 1929, he entered UCLA, majoring in chemistry. In 1934 he graduated from UCLA with highest honors, and later the same year he began graduate school in chemistry at UC Berkeley. After receiving his Ph.D. degree from UC Berkeley, he worked for two years as the personal research assistant to Prof. G. N. Lewis at the Berkeley campus. In 1939, he became an Instructor in the College of Chemistry at UC Berkeley. After the war effort, Helen and Glenn returned to Berkeley where he was Professor of Chemistry and where their children were born: Peter in 1946, Lynne in 1947, David in 1949, Stephen in 1951, Eric in 1954, and Dianne in 1959. In 1951, Glenn received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with E. M. McMillan for his work on the chemistry of the transuranium elements. From 1958 to 1961, Glenn was Chancellor at UC Berkeley.

Seaborg died Thursday night at his home in Lafayette, near Berkeley, where he had been convalescing since August, when he suffered a stroke while being honored at an American Chemical Society meeting in Boston. "Dr. Seaborg was a true giant of the 20th century, a legend in the annals of scientific discovery," Berkeley Lab Director Charles Shank said. Seaborg, who worked on the Manhattan Project that unleashed the atomic bomb during World War II, went on to campaign for the peaceful use of atomic energy and against the testing of nuclear weapons. Outside the laboratory, he served as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, forerunner to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, from 1961-1971. But it was in the lab, mostly at the University of California, Berkeley, that Seaborg gained renown as one of the century's greatest scientists. In addition to sharing the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with the late Edwin McMillan for research into the transuranium elements (those beyond uranium on the periodic table), Seaborg received the National Medal of Science in 1991, the nation's highest award for scientific achievement.

    Extractions: Fizz and Fission On April 19, 1912 the Seaborgs, a hard working Swedish family in the mining town of Ispeming, Michigan, welcomed a son they named Glenn Theodore. They taught him their family traditions and language from the old country. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather shared another tradition: they were machinists and that is what Glenn might have been, but his parents decided to move to Southern California when he was ten years old. Seaborg attended high school in the Watts district of Los Angeles where his heritage was one of many ethnic backgrounds. His parents encouraged him to take business courses because the work was cleaner and more reliable than the machinist trade. He chose, however, the college prep courses. In his freshman year, Seaborg decided the textbook was too boring and refused to take a science course. He made the same decision in his sophomore year. In his junior year, he was reminded that if he wanted to go to UCLA he would have to take two years of laboratory science, so he signed up for chemistry. Mr. Reed, his teacher, had a tremendous love for science and built up a great deal of human interest with stories about chemists and chemical discoveries. Seaborg loved chemistry. The next year he took physics and he loved that, too. He thought of majoring in physics in college, but decided on chemistry. When Seaborg started college at UCLA in 1929, the school consisted of only four permanent buildings. To pay his tuition, he worked as a dock laborer, an apricot picker, a lab assistant at a rubber company, and a printer's apprentice. Seaborg's enthusiasm for science grew as he learned of new discoveries in nuclear chemistry and physics which were taking place in Europe and at the nearby Berkeley campus of the University of California. He soon decided to become involved in this emerging science.
