Extractions: My interest in medical research started at the age of 23, when I joined the National Institute of Medical Research (NIMR, MRC) Mill Hill, London, England. I was fortunate to work with and be exposed to the stimulating influences of such scientists as Dr. D. F. Elliott, Sir Charles Harington, Dr. R.R. Porter , Dr. A.J.P. Martin , Dr. R. Pitt-Rivers, Dr. J. Gross, Dr. T. S. Work, Dr. H. Fraenkel-Conrat, and Dr. W. Cornforth McGill University . There I learned endocrinology from the brilliant lectures by Professor D. L. Thomson and from my work with Dr. M. Saffran in the laboratory of experimental therapeutics of the Allan Memorial Institute of Psychiatry headed by Dr. R. A. Cleghorn. The work at this laboratory was devoted to ACTH and adrenal cortical steroids. That period marked the beginning of my interest in the relationship between brain function and endocrine activity, and it was there in 1954 that my involvement in the hypothalamic field began.

Extractions: A Simple Biography of a Complex Endocrinologist: Andrew V. Schally Holly Kent Anatomy and Physiology of Domestic Animals, Department of Animal Science and Food Technology Texas Tech University, Lubbock 79409-2141 Abstract The purpose of this biographical paper is to provide the reader with pertinent information about the endocrinologist, Andrew Schally, who won the 1977 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work with pituitary hormones. Schally, who is of Polish decent, received his education at the University of London in Chemistry. He then joined the National Institute for Medical Research, where he was able to work with many skilled scientists through the years of 1950-1952. In 1955 Schally received his Ph.D. at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. While working at Baylor University in Houston, TX, Schally and Dr. M. Saffran proved for the first time in history that pituitary function is regulated by hypothalamic hormones. Schally's greatest accomplishments include his studies on somatostatin, the thyrotropin-releasing hormone, and the luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone. A. Schally went on to be appointed as chief of the VA hospital in New Orleans as well as professor at Tulan University in 1966.

POLANYI (Chemistry, 1986) John Polanyi who was born in Berlin, Germany in 1929, migrated with his Hungarian parents to England in 1933. He did his university studies at Manchester University, earning his Ph.D. in 1952, the same year in which he came to Canada. He worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the National Research Council Laboratories in Ottawa from 1952-1954, and as a research associate at Princeton University from 1954-1956. In 1956 he joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto where he has remained every since. His research involved the development of a new field of research in chemistry-reaction dynamics-providing a much more detailed understanding of how chemical reactions take place. For this work, he shared the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His ongoing research has earned him many other awards and honours, including, the Royal Medal of the Royal Society, and some thirty honorary degrees from six countries. Dr. Polanyi has served on the Prime Minister of Canada's Advisory Board on Science and Technology, and the Premier's Council of Ontario. An advocate of international human rights, he was a founding member of the Committee on Scholarly Freedom of the Royal Society, and the Canadian Committee for Scientists and Scholars, and the founding Chairman of the Canadian Pugwash Group in 1960. Dr. Polanyi has written extensively on science policy, the control of armaments, and peacekeeping.

Extractions: CONTACT: New Orleans - Andrew V. Schally, PhD. , D.Sc., M.D.H.C., winner of the 1977 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology, will be honored December 10th at a reception at Tulane University Medical Center celebrating the 20th anniversary of his Nobel Prize in Medicine. Dr. Schally is a professor of medicine and head of the section of Experimental Medicine at Tulane and chief of the Endocrine, Polypeptide and Cancer Institute at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in New Orleans. In 1977, he shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine in recognition of his work on the isolation, identification, synthesis, and clinical application of hypothalamic hormones (brain hormones). "The world continues to reap the benefits of Dr. Schally's work," says Tulane Medical Center Chancellor John C. LaRosa M.D. "His ongoing search for the 'magic bullet' that will give hope to all those who suffer from advanced hormone-dependant cancers has produced consistent and important advances. Dr. Schally is a dedicated, internationally recognized researcher whom Tulane is proud to honor with this celebration of his work." Brain hormones discovered by Dr. Schally have many clinical applications. Today, agonistic analogues of LH-RH are being used for the treatment of advanced prostatic carcinoma, endometriosis, uterine leiomyomas (fibroids), breast cancer and central precocious puberty. Acceptance of LH-RH analogues is excellent, and in a recent survey of patients with advanced prostate cancer who were offered a choice between orchiectomy (surgical castration) and LH-RH agonists, the analogues were selected more than 70% of the time as primary treatment.

Extractions: Andrew V. Schally was born on November 30, 1926 in Wilno, Poland (now Lithuania). Schally fled Poland with his family in 1939. He attended the University of London and worked for three years at the National Institute for Medical Research in London before travelling to Montreal to enter McGill University. He graduated in 1955 and two years later obtained a Ph.D. in biochemistry. From 1957 to 1962 he was associated with Baylor University in Houston, Texas, and in the latter year he became chief of endocrine and polypeptide laboratories at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in New Orleans. At the same time he joined the medical faculty of the Tulane University School of Medicine, becoming professor in 1967. He became senior medical investigator with the Veterans Administration in 1973. Schally became a U.S. citizen in 1962. In 1977, Andrew V. Schally, Ph.D., Sc.D., MDHC, endocrinologist, clinical professor of medicine and chief of experimental medicine, was one of the recipients of the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology for his pioneering work in the field of peptide hormone research. Among Schally's chief accomplishments were the synthesis of TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone), the isolation and synthesis of LH-RH (luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone), and studies of the action of somatostatin.
