Everett Koop was born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 14, 1916, graduated from Dartmouth College in 1937 and received his M.D. degree from Cornell Medical College in 1941. After serving an internship at the Pennsylvania Hospital, he pursued postgraduate training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Boston Children's Hospital and the Graduate School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, from which he received the degree of Doctor of Science of (Medicine) in 1947. After promotions up the academic ladder, he was named Professor Surgery, School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania in 1959 and Professor of Pediatrics in 1971. He is presently the Elizabeth DeCamp McInerny Professor of Surgery at Dartmouth Medical School. Dr. Koop was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health, U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) in March 1981, and sworn in as Surgeon General on November 17, 1981. Additionally, he was appointed Director of the Office of International Health in May 1982. As Surgeon General, Dr. Koop oversaw the activities of the 6,000 member PHS Commissioned Corps and advised the public on health matters such as smoking and health, diet and nutrition, environmental health hazards and the importance of immunization and disease prevention. He also became the government's chief spokesman on AIDS. He resigned on October 1, 1989 and continues to educate the public about health issues through his writings, the electronic media, and as Senior Scholar of the C. Everett Koop Institute at Dartmouth.

Extractions: 25 Aug 1999 Today is the 83rd birthday of Frederick Chapman Robbins, an American pediatrician and virologist who played an important role in the development of the polio vaccine. After investigating viral epidemics for the U.S. Army during World War II, Robbins joined a research team at the Children's Hospital in Boston. In 1948, he found a way to grow viruses in the laboratory, using cultured cells in a nutrient solutiona discovery that made isolation and study of viruses much easier. By 1952, Robbins's group had successfully propagated the polio virus in mixtures of human embryonic skin and muscle cells. This culture system not only helped Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin produce polio vaccines, but also shed light on how poliomyelitis attacks the body. It suggested that the virus infects other tissues first before it invades the brain and spinal cord. Goedowne was the promanant spelling for the family while they were living in England. The name has been found to have a number of possible spellings: lesGodon, Godon, Godonet, Godinot, or Godinet, all coming from the French Huguenots. Godon is found in Amsterdam. Godonet and Godinot also was quite prominet in the Provinces of Lyon and Champagne in Southern France. Godown, Godowne, Gordown, Goodown, and Godowns are spellings that have been found here in the US and in England we find Goedowne, Goodowne, Godowne, and Godown. Notes received from Patrick Godon: Concerning Godonet it could be just the French word for 'little' (or young) Godon. For example in French boy is 'garcon' and young (or little) boy is 'garconnet'. A good index could be if Godonet appears also as Godonnet with 2 n's. By the way, I had a look at the Oxford English Dictionary for Godon and found: Godown (also godon, gadong, gedong, goedown) an Anglo-Indian word, supposed to be a place where goods lie (some early writers state that these stores were subterranean, which may partly account for the form which the word has assumed in English). Coming from Malay godong. Some references are made with date: 1588 T.Hickock tr. C. Frederick's Voy. 27 a, The merchants have all one house or Magason, which house they call Godon. etc... The interessing point here is that godon and godown seems just to be different spelling of the same word which can in fact give the same sound.
