Insulin is required by the body to use glucose, the simple sugar that most foods are broken down into by our digestive system. Without insulin, the body starves to death. It's important to note that everyone is insulin-dependent. People without diabetes make insulin in their pancreas. People with Type 1 diabetes must inject insulin. According to the National Institutes of Health , an estimated 850,000 to 1.7 million Americans have Type 1 diabetes. Of those, about 125,000 are kids 19 and under. An additional 30,000 Americans develop Type 1 diabetes every year, 13,000 of whom are children.
Extractions: SOK MÚLOTT A VÉLETLENEN NOBEL-DÍJ AZ INZULINÉRT Az elsõ Nobel-díj odaítélését 1901-ben jelentették be Oslóban és a világ azóta is legismertebb kitüntetését a Svéd Királyi Akadémián nyújtották át.

All Nobel laureates still alive have been invited to the Centennial celebrations which will begin in the first week of December 2001 and will culminate on 10 December when the year 2001 laureates receive their prizes followed by the banquet. More than 225 laureates still alive have accepted the invitation to participate in the celebrations. The first Nobel awards were announced in 1901 in Christiania (now called Oslo) and the award function was held in Stockholm at the Royal Academy of Music (1). Several activities are planned as part of the festival. Their Majesties the King and Queen of Sweden inaugurated a Nobel Centennial exhibition on 1 April 2001 at the Old Stockholm stock exchange. This will remain as a permanent exhibition. A copy of the centennial exhibition will be inaugurated on 9 August in Oslo and will be exhibited in various parts of the world as a touring exhibition beginning in Tokyo in March 2002. In Oslo, there will be a Centennial Exhibition at the Norwegian Folk Museum and an issue of eight Nobel Peace Prize stamps and two Nobel coins, one in gold and one in silver. More than 30 Peace Prize laureates will attend the Peace Prize symposium.

Extractions: Sir Frederick Banting is one of the most recognized Canadians of the last one hundred years because of his large part in the discovery of insulin injections. If not for him, and his assistant, many diabetic people could die each and every day. Sir Frederick Grant Banting was born in Alliston, Ontario on November 14, 1891. He was the youngest child of five in his family, a middle class family who owned and operated a farm. He made his way through high school, and enrolled at the University of Toronto, where he began to study the arts. He failed in his first year, and then decided to enroll in medicine. He passed this course and graduated in 1916 accumulating above-average marks in his field. When Banting left university, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces, where he served as a medical officer. He participated in World War I, where he was wounded in combat while attending to an injured soldier. For this great act of bravery, he was decorated for valour with the Military Cross. When the war ended, Banting made his return to his home, where he completed his study of orthopaedic surgery. He began his career
