After serving as professor at the universities of Kiel (1898-1907) and Heidelberg (1896-98, 1907-31), he headed the Philipp Lenard Institute at Heidelberg. He was the first to cause cathode rays to pass from the interior of a vacuum tube through a thin metal window into the air, where they produce luminosity. For his research in this field he received the 1905 Nobel Prize in Physics. He is noted also for his work on the structure of the atom and for the discovery (1902), in connection with the photoelectric effect, that the velocity of electrons is independent of the intensity of the light that emits them.

Extractions: Lenard was born in Pozsony, Hungary (now Bratislava, Slovak Republic), and studied at Heidelberg and Berlin. In 1898 he became professor of experimental physics at Kiel, and held the same post at Heidelberg 1907-31. In 1924 Lenard became a Nazi. Obsessed with the idea of producing a purely 'Aryan' physics, he spent his later years reviling Albert Einstein and other Jewish physicists. Lenard's work on cathode rays began 1892, and led him to the conclusion that an atom is mostly empty space. He also suggested that the part of the atom where the mass was concentrated consisted of neutral doublets or 'dynamids' of negative and positive electricity. This preceded by ten years the classic model of the atom proposed by Ernest Rutherford 1911. Lenard devised the grid in the thermionic valve that controls electron flow. He showed that an electron must have a certain minimum energy before it can produce ionization in a gas. He also studied luminescent compounds and, from 1902 onwards, discovered several fundamental effects in photoelectricity.

May 20, 1947, Messelhausen, Ger.), German physicist, winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1905 for his research on cathode rays and the discovery of many of their properties. His results had important implications for the development of electronics and nuclear physics. After serving as a lecturer and as an assistant to Heinrich Hertz at the University of Bonn in 1893, Lenard was professor of physics successively at the universities of Breslau (1894), Aachen (1895), Heidelberg (1896), and Kiel (1898). In 1907 he returned to the University of Heidelberg as professor of physics, where he stayed until his retirement in 1931. Applying the discovery that cathode rays pass through thin leaves of metal, Lenard constructed (1898) a cathode-ray tube with an aluminum window through which the rays could pass into the open air. Using a phosphorescent screen, he showed that the rays decreased in number as the screen was drawn away from the tube and that they ceased at a distance. The experiments also demonstrated that the power of substances to absorb the rays depends on their density and not on their chemical nature and that absorption decreases with increasing velocity of the rays. In similar experiments in 1899 he proved that cathode rays are created when light strikes metal surfaces; this phenomenon later became known as the
