Sports Tuesday, March 11, 2003 SCIENCE Nobel laureates oppose war against Iraq By Belle Dumé Forty-one American Nobel laureates have signed a declaration opposing war with Iraq. The declaration was organized by Walter Kohn, a theoretical physicist at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and former adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Pentagon. The signatories include 19 winners of the physics prize. The declaration reads: The undersigned oppose a preventive war against Iraq without broad international support. Military operations against Iraq may indeed lead to a relatively swift victory in the short term. But war is characterized by surprise, human loss and unintended consequences. Even with a victory, we believe that the medical, economic, environmental, moral, spiritual, political and legal consequences of an American preventive attack on Iraq would undermine, not protect, US security and standing in the world. The signatories include Norman Ramsey, who worked on the Manhattan Project, and Charles Townes, a former research director of the Institute for Defense Analyses at the Pentagon. Townes was also chairman of a federal panel that studied nuclear warheads.

Extractions: LECTURE SERIES "THEIR OWN VOICES. THE HISTORY OF MODERN SCIENCE REFERRED BY ITS LEADING CHARACTERS" Lecture by Har Gobind Khorana, 1968 Nobel of Medicine. MADRID, 22th JUNE 2000 Programme Resumen Conferencia Har Gobind Khorana (Raipur-India 1922) was awarded the 1968 Nobel Laureate in Medicine, together with Robert W. Holley and Marshall W. Niremberg, for their interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis. After an initial stage at the Punjab University, where he obtained a Master in Science degree, and thanks to the award of a Government of India Fellowship, he moved to England, where he studied for a Ph. D.degree at the University of Liverpool. Then he spent a postdoctoral year at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule in Zurich, working with Prof. Vladimir Prelog. After that he stayed in Cambridge from 1959 to 1992, working with Dr. G. W. Kenner and Prof. A. R. Todd. These three people where crucial in the configuration of his thought and philosophy towards science as well as his interest in proteins and nucleic acids. In 1952 he received a job offer from British Columbia, what took him to Vancouver, and in 1960 he moved to the Institute for Enzyme Research at the University of Wisconsin, becoming then a naturalized citizen of the United States. As of the fall of 1970, Khorana has been Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Biology and Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. .

Extractions: NIH 1999 Almanac Lectures and Nobel Laureates The NIH Lectures The NIH Lecture series was established to facilitate interchange of information and to give appropriate recognition for outstanding scientific accomplishment. Since January 1953, the various institutes and the Office of the Director have sponsored lectures. The series has been planned to recur each year, with the lectures published and distributed to scientific libraries, universities, medical schools, and other appropriate depositories. Lectures are open to the scientific staff at NIH and at other medical, teaching, and research institutions in the Washington, D.C., area. As part of the NIH Lecture series, an annual G. Burroughs Mider Lectureship Award was established in 1968 in honor of the first NIH director of laboratories and clinics, to be presented by a member of the NIH intramural staff in "recognition and appreciation of outstanding contributions to biomedical research." An asterisk (*) indicates a Mider Lecture. The following lectures have been given. Date Title Presenter January 21, 1953
