Hulse and Joseph H. Taylor, Jr, both of Princeton University, for the discovery of a new type of pulsar, which has opened up new possibilities for the study of gravitation. They discovered this new type of pulsar in 1974 using the 300-m radiotelescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, West Indies. A binary pulsar is a pulsar with two heavy bodies orbiting each other. The significance of this discovery is that the behavior of these two bodies deviates greatly from what classical Newtonian mechanics predicts. The behavior of this system has been studied closely and used to verify Einsteins general theory of relativity. So far the predicted and actual observations vary by only 10^-3. This system has also been used to study gravitational waves.

PSR B1913+16 was first detected on July 2nd, 1974, and the discovery was reported in a letter to the Astrophysical Journal in January 1975 ( Ap. J. The large orbital velocities in this system, the high eccentricity, and strong gravitational fields provide a laboratory for the study of relativistic physics. In particular, the precise measurement of pulse arrival times, which has continued at Arecibo over the years, have led to the conclusion that the observed decrease in orbital kinetic energy is in quantitative accord with the rate expected from damping by gravitational radiation as predicted by Einstein's theory of gravity. These results were published in February 1979 ( Nature , 437). This was, and continues to be, the only experimental evidence for the production of gravitational radiation, fittingly coming at the centenary of Einstein's birth. C. Salter
