Professor Heeger and his colleagues at the University of California, Santa Barbara, have done pioneering research in the area of semiconducting and metallic polymers. His current interests are focused on light emission from semiconducting polymers, including photoluminescence, light-emitting diodes, light-emitting electrochemical cells, and lasers. The MRL seed project (with Prof. S. DenBaars as co-PI) involves the development of hybrid structures of LEDs and lasers; in these hybrid structures the InGaN LED is used either to pump the photoluminescence from conjugated polymers for generation of white light (and high brightness LEDs of all colors) or to pump polymer lasers and thereby create a class of electrically pumped diode lasers with colors that span the visible spectrum. Plastics, generally thought to be incapable of conducting electricity, are polymers, molecules whose structure is repeated in long chains. Heeger, MacDiarmid and Shirakawa showed that polymers can conduct electricity if they are "doped" by removing or introducing electrons and if they consist alternately of single and double bonds between carbon atoms.

Back to Calendar by Over 600 people from 29 nations attended the 5th International Symposium on Functional p -Electron Systems (F p 5), which took place in Ulm/Neu-Ulm, Germany, from 30 May to 4 June 2002. The two main objectives were to combine chemistry, physics, biology (in particular) and applications of functional p -electron systems on the one hand, and to strengthen interactions between academia and industrial research laboratories on the other hand. Heeger (University of California, Santa Barbara, USA), who spoke about "Photo-voltaic cells and biosensors using luminescent conjugated polymers" and Professor Jean-Marie Lehn (University of Strasbourg, France), who spoke about "Self-organization of functional architectures from heteroaromatic components."
