Extractions: showhdr("gorb") Born: March 2, 1931. M ikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev was born on March 2, 1931 in Privolye, Stavropol, U.S.S.R. He was general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 - 1991 and president of the Soviet Union from 1990 - 1991. Entered law school of the Moscow State University and became a member of the Communist Party. Graduated with a degree on law and went on to hold several posts in Komsomol and regular party organizations in Stavropol. Became the first secretary of the regional party. Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1971. Became party secretary of agriculture. Candidate of the Politburo (in 1980 he became a full member of the Politburo). H e owed much of his steady rise in the party to the patronage of Mikhail Suslov, the leading party ideologue. During Andropov's 15 month tenure from 1982 - 1984 as a secretary general of the Communist Party, Gorbachev became a highly active and above all visible member. After Andropov's death in February 1984, Konstatin Chernenko became secretary general and it was likely that Gorbachev would be his successor. However, on March 10, 1985, Chernenko died, resulting in the election of Gorbachev as general secretary by the Politburo the following day. D uring Leonid Brezhnev's tenure (1964 - 1982) the Soviet Union's economic growth was almost absent. Gorbachev called for rapid technological modernization and increased worker productivity. He tried to turn the Soviet bureaucracy into a more efficient and more responsive organization.

Extractions: Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev Mikhail Gorbachev was a person who when he received the Nobel Prize for Peace had ended the cold war and changed the relationship of his country with the rest of the world. He was a communist who never strayed from the ideals of Lenin. He was a very private person who kept his family out of the limelight. Very little is known of the person himself. One of the other campaigns he is known for is his opposition to alcohol in a country that has a high consumption of it. This site gives a reasonably good account of his early life and rise to power. Perhaps the most graphic scene witnessed on TV was the pulling down of the Berlin Wall reducing it to souvenirs. This had long been a symbol of the USSR for the rest of the world.

Extractions: By Elina Grossman Gorbachev was a man of great honor and pride. He was one of the world's greatest leaders of all times, with great causes. He gave Russia a new reason to celebrate, and led the famous perestroika. His name will always be celebrated in Russia, and the people of Russia will always give thanks to him. Gorbachev will never be forgotten. On a bright spring morning of March 2 1931, a new baby came into this world that was going to change the world, and no one even knew it! His name was Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev . He was born to peasant parents in the village of Privol'noye, in Stravropol, which is a region in southwest Russia. In the 1930's there were a lot of difficulties. The Stalinist era meant terror. Even Gorbachev's grandparents were arrested. Famine also hit many regions. In school he was a model child. He made the highest grades in his classes, and was a very bright boy. He joined the Communist Youth League in 1946. When Gorbachev turned nineteen years old, he was admitted into law school and Moscow State University. (1950) One of the only reasons he was accepted was because of his status as a probationary member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. (Which was very rare at his young age) He was finally accepted to be a full member of the Communist Party in 1952. That year he also graduated from Moscow State University, majoring in law. In college Gorbachev met his future wife Raisa Titorenko . She was bright, independent, and a very attractive young lady. She studied philosophy in college, and Gorbachev was intrigued. He got married to Raisa in 1953 and in 1956, their first daughter, Irina was born.

Extractions: Get your own Free Webpage Biography Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, b. Mar. 2, 1931, general secretary of the Soviet Communist party (1985-91) and president of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (1988-91), was the last leader of the USSR. By his reform programs of GLASNOST and PERESTROIKA, Gorbachev hoped to breathe new life into the increasingly stagnant Soviet system. Instead, by removing the rigid controls that had kept the system together for decades, he brought about its dissolution. He thus played a pivotal role in the dramatic series of events that transformed the international scene in the 1990s: the end of the cold war between East and West, the sudden disappearance of the Soviet empire, and the virtual elimination of communism as a dominant influence in world affairs. Born and raised on a collective farm in the Stavropol region, Gorbachev worked as a young man at a machine-tractor station. He studied law at Moscow University and joined the Communist party in 1952. Rising in the ranks, he became party chief of the Stavropol region in 1970. A protege of KGB chief Yuri ANDROPOV, Gorbachev was elected to the party's Central Committee in 1971. In 1978 he was brought to Moscow as an agricultural expert. When Andropov was chosen head of the party in 1982, Gorbachev aided the ailing leader in his reform efforts. After the deaths of Andropov and his short-lived successor, Konstantin CHERNENKO, Gorbachev, who had emerged as the dominant figure in the Soviet hierarchy, was named general secretary of the Soviet Communist party in March 1985.
