2000 - Zhores I. Extractions: Scientist Timeline Lesson Plan By Jennifer L. Bausch Objective- Students, working in pairs, will be introduced to ten scientists and will create a timeline showing their place in history and their major accomplishment. Time Frame: 3 days (1 hour sessions) 1- Introduction to assignment, Research 2- Research, Begin to create timeline 3- Finish creating timeline, Present scientist timelines to the class Materials- markers, crayons, rulers, glue Procedure: Initiation- 1- Pass out a piece of drawing paper to each student. Ask them to draw a picture of what they think a famous scientist looks like. When the drawings are finished, display them so that all students may see them. Ask the class if they notice any similarities about the pictures. (old men, glasses, nerds, lab coats....)Ask them if they think all scientists are like this. 2. Next, have the class generate a list of all the scientists they can think of. Write these names on the board. Are there any women? Are there any minorities? Body- 1- Tell the students that they will be discovering ten famous scientists and their major accomplishments. They will use various forms of technical media to discover these scientists. 2- Pass out ten index cards to each pair of students. On each card they are to write the scientists name, their date of birth and date of death, and a sentence describing their major accomplishment.

Mental health and depression UC professor awarded Nobel Prize in chemistry Walter Kohn of the University of California at Santa Barbara and John Pople of Northwestern University are winners of the 1998 Nobel Prize in chemistry. They will share $978,000. "The laureates have each made pioneering contributions in developing methods that can be used for theoretical studies of the properties of molecules and the chemical processes in which they are involved," said the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on making the announcement Tuesday. Kohn, a physicist, was cited for his development of density-functional theory the basis of many aspects of computational chemistry, in which the geometrical structure of molecules can be mapped and reactions predicted. Pople, a mathematician, received the award for his development of computational methods in quantum chemistry. His 1970 computer program, Gaussian, allows chemists to apply quantum calculations in making rapid, reasonably accurate estimates of molecular behavior. Improvements in the Gaussian program, the Nobel committee said, have been so dramatic that it "is now used by thousands of chemists in universities and commercial companies the world over." Kohn was the second UC professor this week to receive a Nobel Prize Louis Ignarro, a professor in the department of molecular and medical pharmacology at UCLA's School of Medicine, was co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The number of UC faculty who have received the Nobel Prize now stands at 34. No other public university system worldwide has won more Nobel prizes than the University of California.

Extractions: March 14, 2002 (26) Four honorary degrees to be awarded ANN ARBOR-The University of Michigan Regents voted at their March 14 meeting to award four honorary degrees at the University's spring commencement exercises. Honorary degrees will be presented to Donald A. Glaser , professor of physics and of molecular and cell biology in the Division of Neurobiology, Graduate School, University of California, Berkeley, and winner of the 1960 Nobel Prize in physics; William H. Gray III , president and chief executive officer of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and former U.S. congressman; John Rich , award-winning television and film director and producer; and Donna E. Shalala , president of the University of Miami and former secretary of health and human services. Gray will give the main address at the Spring Commencement on April 27, and Shalala will be the main speaker at the University Graduate Exercises on April 26. Gray Gray, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1978 until his appointment to the UNCF in 1991, chaired the Democratic Caucus and served as majority whip. He was the highest-ranking African American to serve in Congress and he played a key role in implementing economic sanctions against South Africa as author of the 1985 and 1986 sanction bills, and served as special adviser to President Clinton on Haiti in 1994. Gray, the first African American to chair the House Budget Committee, was a staunch supporter of education.

Ignarro, a professor in the department of molecular and medical pharmacology at the UCLA School of Medicine, was one of three recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine brings to 33 the number of UC faculty who have won Nobel prizes. No other public university system worldwide has won more Nobel Prizes than the University of California. "The work of Professor Ignarro and his colleagues has opened fields of inquiry that have important implications for improving health and saving lives around the world," said Richard C. Atkinson, UC President. "A distinguished teacher, Professor Ignarro has now won the highest honor a researcher can receive. I am pleased to congratulate him on behalf of the university and to say how proud we are to share in the reflected glow of his accomplishment." Ignarro's award is the ninth physiology or medicine Nobel won by a UC faculty member. Last year, UCSF's Stanley Prusiner won the Nobel Prize for his work on prions.

Extractions: against the aggression on Croatia Many people throughout the world contributed to the international recognition of Croatia (January 15, 1992). We would like to present a list of 104 Nobel prize winners (in alphabetic order) who signed an appeal to stop the aggression of the Yugoslav Army on Croatia that started in 1991 (The New York Times, January 14th, 1992). We do this we the feeling of deepest gratitude. During the past several weeks the Yugoslav Army has escalated its war against Croatia. Dozens of villages have been razed. Many historical monuments have been destroyed. Several cities, including Croatia's capital of Zagreb, have been bombed. Over 2,000* people have been killed. The undeclared war has already produced more than 100,000* refugees. The violence and destruction unleashed in Croatia is on a scale unknown in Europe since the Second World War. Innocent civilians are massacred. Hospitals and places of worship are destroyed. Conscience demands that we raise our voices against this senseless war. We appeal to the Western and Eastern governments to stop the Yugoslav Army wanton destruction.
