Extractions: Euler-Chelpin Bavaria-Verlag in full HANS KARL AUGUST SIMON VON EULER-CHELPIN (b. Feb. 15, 1873, Augsburg, Ger.d. Nov. 7, 1964, Stockholm, Swed.), Swedish biochemist who shared the 1929 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Sir Arthur Harden for work on enzymes in the fermentation of sugar. After graduating from the University of Berlin (1895), Euler-Chelpin worked with Walther Nernst and in 1897 became assistant to Svante Arrhenius at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He joined the faculty at the University of Stockholm (1900), where he became professor of general and inorganic chemistry (1906) and director of the new biochemical institute (1929). Euler-Chelpin identified the various substrates acted upon by enzymes in the course of fermentation reactions, and he traced the role of phosphates in the fermentation of sugar. He particularly studied coenzymes, which act or "coact" with enzymes and are necessary for their action. In the case of zymase, an enzyme in yeast, he isolated its coenzyme, cozymase, and determined its chemical structure. He also helped determine the chemical structure of several vitamins, which form portions of coenzymes.

Extractions: American biologist and molecular geneticist who studied a species of Salmonella (bacteria that cause illnesses such as typhoid fever or food poisoning in humans and other warm- blooded animals). He discovered genetic transduction, or transfer of genetic information by viruses. Genetic material is transferred from one bacterial cell to another by means of a phage, or a virus that invades the bacterial cell, assumes control over the cell's genetic material, reproduces, then eventually destroys the cell. His discovery of this genetic transfer has led to further studies into the mapping and behavior of genes found in bacteria. Daniel Nathans in collaboration with Zinder in 1962 demonstrated that RNA from a bacterial virus directed the synthesis by cell extracts of viral coat protein. Konrad Lorenz Austrian zoologist , founder of modern ethology, the study of animal behaviour by means of comparative zoological methods. He was known affectionately by his pupils as the "father of the grey geese" which he studied. His ideas revealed how behavioral patterns may be traced to an evolutionary past, and he was also known for his work on the roots of aggression. He shared the 1973 Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine, for developing a unified, evolutionary theory of animal and human behaviour. He was also a vehement environmentalist, criticizing prodigality and believed that nature protection is necessary for the preservation of humanity. Even late in life, he participated in demonstrations even if in conflict with government and authorities.

Extractions: American physicist, military analyst (1948-61) and futurist best known for his controversial studies of nuclear warfare. Kahn won recognition for his dispassionate analysis of nuclear war in his books On Thermonuclear War (1960) which still, in its detached analysis of various nuclear-war scenarios, retains the power to shock.and Thinking About the Unthinkable (1962) which predicted the probability and survivability of nuclear war. Later books included the optimistic The Year 2000 (1967) and Why ABM ? (1969). In 1961 he founded the influential Hudson Institute in New York to make reasoned predictions on world affairs, from narcotics policy to global economics, energy, international trade, population, transportation, crime, medicine. Albert C. Gilbert Albert Carlton Gilbert was the inventor of the Erector set. Gilbert founded the A.C. Gilbert Co. New Haven, Connecticut in 1908 as a manufacturer of boxed magic sets. When he introduced Erector Sets in 1913, there were several construction toys out. The most prominent was the Meccano construction toy developed by Hornby in England, which consisted of pulleys, gears, and several 1/2" wide strips of varying length with holes evenly spaced on them. Gilbert needed something unique, and created was the square girder. Gilbert's Erector sets included several 1" wide strips with triangles cut in them and the edges bent over so 4 strips could be put together with 2 screws to form a very sturdy square girder. Erector Sets sold 30 million over the next 40 years.
