    Extractions: Dr. Edelman's writing is unintelligible to many, if not most, neurophysiologists and psychologists. It could be that his theory is so novel that it is difficult to grasp, but he makes little effort at clarity, a duty that is incumbent on all scientists. Moreover, until he shows how this theory explains in detail concrete examples of behavior, it cannot be taken seriously. . . . In the absence of evidence, his attempt to correlate different parts of the brain with different kinds of consciousness is largely speculative. Were such evidence available, we would still be no closer to understanding how or why consciousness has arisen. It remains the ultimate mystery, perhaps one that will never be solved. Maybe Dr. Edelman should have taken a hint from Wittgenstein : 'Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must remain silent.' Synopsis Nobel laureate Edelman (The Rockefeller U., The Neurosciences Institute) proposes a grand theory of consciousness, integrating findings in the neurosciences, anatomy, cell biology, and psychology to construct a detailed model of how we become aware of our own existence. Edelman When someone begins with a basic belief, a devoted a priori assumption that biology and the brain are the lowest common denominator of all sentience, the result is such a book as this - where complicated and pained efforts are taken to explain human consciousness, thought, and imagination as by-products of chemical reactions and electrical impulses - as a result of biology and "neural" evolution. Also, typical of modern "scientists", Darwin is dedicatedly believed and Darwin's theories are reorganized to apply to neurology, nerve formation, and brain development. How long before we are all walking around with microchip brain implants guaranteeing our tranquility, serenity, productivity, happiness and satisfaction? Reviews Edelman is absolutely right to approach the problems of consciousness in the manner he does. Consciousness is a biological phenomena which can only be understood in terms of it's biological, evolutionary, and developmental context. The completion of Darwin's Program is a must if consciousness is to be integrated into the larger body of scientific knowledge that is biology. While the Theory of Neuronal Group Selection is only in it's tentative stages, the approach has shown a light on the path that may ultimately lead to a comprehensible theory that is consistent with the rest of the sciences. Gerald Edelman will be to future generations of neuroscientists and lay-persons alike what Charles Darwin is to us today.

Crick recently told a University of California, San Diego audience that a two-year-old book, Neural Darwinism, The Theory of Neuronal Group Selection (Basic Books, 1987) by Nobelist Gerald M. Edelman makes misleading claims for itself. Crick quoted Edelman’s description of the book as “a radically new view of the function of the brain and the nervous system.” Crick admits that the book contains “a number of sensible remarks and good ideas,” specifically citing Edelman’s theory that after neuronal connections are made at the initial stage they are not changed thereafter. But he went on to tell his UCSD audience that, “Readers should not be misled into surmising that since parts of the book are good, then the whole of it must be good. That is not the case.” The simulations used in the book “really are misleading,” he said, charging that at times they don’t prove the particular theory they are intended to buttress. Furthermore, Crick recommended that all references to Darwin be dropped and the theories be labeled “neural-Edelmanism.” Quipped Crick: “It is best not to drag in poor Darwin.” Evidently Edelman doesn’t want to be dragged into the fray either: Several phone calls to his office at Rockefeller University asking for his response to Crick’s caustic comments were not returned.
