   Extractions: After his education in New York public schools, Edelman attended Ursinus College in Pennsylvania and received the B.S. degree, magna cum laude, in 1950. He then attended the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania where he received the M.D. degree in 1954. In the succeeding year, he was a Medical House Officer at the Massachusetts General Hospital . He became a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1955 and practiced general medicine at a Station Hospital connected with the American Hospital in Paris, France. In 1957, he joined the Rockefeller Institute as a graduate fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Henry G. Kunkel. After receiving the Ph.D. degree in 1960, he remained at the Rockefeller Institute as Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies and started work in his own laboratory. In 1963, he became Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, a position from which he retired in 1966. From that time to the present, he has been a Professor of the Rockefeller University. Edelman is a member of the National Academy of Sciences , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , the American Society of Biological Chemists and the American Association of Immunologists, as well as a number of other scientific societies. He served as professor of immunology at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, London, until 1967, when he joined the faculty at the University of Oxford. Porter approached the problem of antibody structure by using an enzyme, papain, to cleave the blood's immunoglobulin molecule into functionally different fragments, which were then amenable to structural analysis. Edelman, working independently, used different methods to break up the molecule, and concluded that rather than a single chain of amino acids, it was a multichain entity. Porter and his research team were then able to determine the now universally accepted four-chain model of the antibody. Using his fragmentation technique, Porter studied the chains of the molecule separately, while Edelman worked on the whole molecule. By 1969 a complete model of the molecule, comprising more than 1,300 amino acids, had been achieved.

The lecture is part of the BNL 50th Anniversary Distinguished Lecture Series, which features talks on various topics throughout 1997 to celebrate Brookhaven's beginning a half-century ago. The talks are open to the public free of charge. Dr. Edelman has formulated a detailed theory to explain the development and organization of higher brain functions in terms of a process known as neuronal group selection. His theory was presented in 1987, in the widely known book, Neural Darwinism . Dr. Edelman's continuing work in theoretical neuroscience includes designing new kinds of machines, called recognition automata, for testing his theory. In his lecture, Dr. Edelman will discuss neuronal group selection as well as other modern theories on how the brain works and various efforts to stimulate higher brain functions. A native of New York City, Gerald M. Edelman earned a B.S. degree in chemistry from Ursinus College in 1950, and an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1954. He spent a year at the Johnson Foundation of Medical Physics, and served as a medical house officer at Massachusetts General Hospital and, later, as a captain in the Army Medical Corps. In 1960, he earned his Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry at The Rockefeller Institute.
