Extractions: III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.

Extractions: by Will Pitts Fredrik Willem de Klerk Nobel Peace Prize. To understand how F.W de Klerk came to do so much for his country. It is necessary to look at his past. De Kleks family were Dutch Afrikaners, but none of his relatives took part in the journey to the states that the Afrikaners moved to after the British came and took over, but his family is made up of Dutch Afrikaners (de klerk 1 -10). As a child he was born in Voorekker, inside Pretoria. His mothers name was Cornellia Cortzer. She was from the Orange Free state(de Klerk, .12-26). His father was the head master at a learning facility, and then moved on to work and became part of The "White Workers Protection Union", the organization that brought apartheid into his life. His dad died in 1979 and his mom continued to raise him. (De Klerk, F.W.12-26).De Klerk grew up with a Christian background, and his family and surroundings influenced him to take part in apartheid. De klerk attended more than four different schools, which gave him a variety of academic studies. De Klerk was enrolled in the grandest Afrikaners school there was, Monument High School, which was located in Krugerdrop (de klerk, 24-46). Because de klerk had few friends at school he soon became involved in school politics. De Klerk was smart and used his intelligence not only in his academic studies, but also in school government, which would start his life of politics (de klerk, 24-27). In 1954, he attended the University of Potchefstroom, a Christian school. There he played a huge role in the

Extractions: Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Presentation Each student will make a class presentation on a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. Students will give a seven-minute presentation in the first person that is, as if they are the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. After the seven-minute presentation, your classmates will have an opportunity to ask you more about particular aspects of your presentation and to ask how you (as your Nobel Peace Prize Laureate) would answer questions raised in class. Students will pick their person in class. Student presentations will begin on March 21. The date of the presentation will be determined by lottery, held on March 12. In addition, prior to the class preceding the presentation, students will be required to submit a summary of their presentation in bullet form (less than two pages, double spaced). The summaries will be copied and distributed to all students. Both the presentation and the summary should include the following: 1. Birthplace and date 2. Youth experiences/family life 3. Historical context of nonviolent actions
