The roots of the quantum theory lie in unanswered questions of 19 th L udwig Eduard Boltzmann M ax Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck (1858-1947), was one of the leaders of science in Germany until his retirement in 1928. In 1900 he "guessed" the correct form for the blackbody radiation function and attempted to justify the formula by assuming that radiation consists of quanta of energy. Using the formula, Planck was able to deduce the value of h , the Boltzmann constant k (Prince) L ouis-Victor de Broglie E rwin Schrödinger (1887-1961) was an Austrian Catholic who left Germany in 1933 in response to Nazi policies. After the Nazi takeover, he and his wife then fled Austria with a single suitcase to take refuge E nrico Fermi (1901-1954), was the son of an Italian railroad employee. He received his doctorate from the University of Pisa at age 21. In 1926 he developed the statistical method which predicts the behavior of electrons and, shortly thereafter, was made a full professor at the University of Rome at age 26. In 1938, he left Italy with his family to receive the Nobel Prize and did not return; his known distaste for the Fascist regime and the fact that his wife was Jewish had led to vicious attacks in the rightist press. Fermi emigrated to the United States where, as part of the Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago, he led the team that achieved the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction

Extractions: From 1901 onwards Nobel Prizes have been awarded in Chemistry Physics Physiology or Medicine Literature (66) and Peace (46), and since 1969 also in Economics (17) to 391 scientists, economists, peace activists/organisations and writers from today's EU member states or candidate countries. During their journey across Europe, our two Spring Students, Caroline and Marlene , have also tried to find out, who they were, when they were awarded the prize, which countries they came from and where they lived when they received the prize. In the list below you will find reference to the latter in brackets. All links below go to the marvelleous site of the Swedish Academy . So let me invite you to follow our two Spring Students on another, this time not political but scientific, trip across our continent. CHEMISTRY Austria Fritz PREGL Richard KUHN (1939; Prize for 1938)

These darklines, some narrow and some wide, are caused by the absorption of specific frequencies within the atmosphere of the earth or sun. Both colorful and informative, this chart makes an excellant teaching aid for any science classroom. This durable chart (seen above) is printed on heavy paper stock and is fitted with metal binding strips at top and bottom. The upper strip includes tabes suitable for wall haning. Chart dimention is 71cm x 28cm. each Chart - Laminated - Spectrum Analysis This chart shows the visible continuous spectrum of the sun and the emission or bright line spectra of ten relatively common elements. It provides an excellant beginning point to show the student the total individuality of the spectrum of each element. It also presents an opportunity to discuss the general relationship between the number of lines and the number of atomic shell electrons.

Extractions: Prince Louis de Broglie of French Aristocracy was born on August 15, 1892 in Dieppe, France. He was educated at the Sorbonne and received his doctorate there. He proposed that since light had properties of both waves and particles in certain cases, that this particle-wave duality theory could also apply to matter. In 1927, he was able to experimentally confirm this with the electron for which he would receive the nobel prize for physics, in 1929. He died on March 19, 1987. Extractions: Louis de Broglie Prince Louis Victor Pierre Raymond de Broglie belonged to an ancient and famous family. From the seventeenth century on, this family produced several religious leaders, two Marshals of France and two prime ministers. However, both Louis and his older brother Maurice broke from family tradition by taking an active interest in science. While his older brother played a role in this shift of interest, de Broglie also stated that the works of French mathematician Henri Poincare were decisive in changing his mind. The same year de Broglie completed a science degree from the University of Paris, he was drafted into military service. During World War I, de Broglie was stationed in Paris in the Eiffel Tower, working as a wireless operator. In 1924, de Broglie presented this analysis as his doctoral dissertation, entitled "Research on the Quantum Theory" to the University of Paris. He suggested on theoretical grounds that any particles, not only photons, traveling with a momentum p should have (in some sense) a wavelength given by the de Broglie relation: .lambda. = h p The faculty viewed his idea with skepticism, since there existed no experimental evidence to support his view. With the support and encouragement of Albert Einstein, however, de Broglie was awarded his degree and went on to publish his work. Einstein began to promote this analysis among other physicists. Schrodinger used this idea of the dual nature of matter to develop a theory of wave mechanics. By 1927, Davisson and Thomson, working independently were able to demonstrate that electrons could be bent, focused, and diffracted like waves. As a result of this experimental confirmation and for his contribution to quantum mechanics, de Broglie was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1929. He continued to spend the rest of his life devoted to the study of science.
