Churchill reached the height of his fame as the heroic prime minister of Great Britain during World War II. He offered his people only "blood, toil, tears, and sweat" as they struggled to keep their freedom. Churchill also was a noted speaker, author, painter, soldier, and war reporter. Winston Churchill was born on November 30th 1874, at Blenheim Palace to a British father, Lord Randolph Churchill, and an American mother, Jennie Jerome. Churchill did not have a happy childhood. He loathed school and refused to learn Greek as a foreign language, however, he did have an extroardinary memory. He loved to read history and poetry, and was fascinated by soldiers and battles. He enrolled at Sandhurst Military Academy, and graduated in 1894. He was commissioned to the 4th Hussars. He was sent to the South African War as a correspondent for The Morning Post, and was captured by Boers in 1899. His escape made him an overnight celebrity. His political career began in the year 1900, when he was elected to parliament as a conservative. In 1904, he became a liberal. When the liberals came to power in 1905, he became the Under Secretary of the Colonies. In 1908, he married a charming young woman, Clementine Hosier, and was appointed Home Secretary. In 1911, he was appointed 1st Lord of the Admiralty, and in 1915, Minister of Munitions under David Lloyd George. Subsequently he became Secretary of State for War and Air (1918-1921), and Secretary of State for the Colonies (1921-1922), before losing his job when Georges coalition government fell in 1922.
