Extractions: Pearl Sydenstricker Buck Pearl S. Buck was born June 26, 1892 to Absalon and Caroline Sydenstricker in Hillsboro, West Virginia. Pearl was the fourth of seven children. Her parents were both Southern Presbyterian missionaries who moved their family to an assignment in China when Pearl was only four months old. Pearl spent most of her first 40 years in China in the town of Kiangsu where she was taught by her mother and tutor, Mr. Kung. She was a good student and spoke both Chinese and English fluently. In 1910 she enrolled in Randolph-Macon College in Lynchburg, Virginia. She chose this college because the female students had responsibilites and expectations close to what was expected of male students at the time. In the early 1900's, women in college were often expected to be there to search for a husband rather than learning. Pearl had a somewhat difficult time from the start since she had refused to go to a southern finishing school. Throughout her college experience her minimal understanding of American culture caused problems. However, she stayed active and was involved with student government, the YMCA, and wrote for the college's literary magazine and yearbook. After college, she moved back to China which she considered her true home. In 1917 she married John Lossing Buck, an agricultural economist who was doing missionary work. Both he and Pearl spent time in Nanking working as teachers. In 1921 Pearl's mother died which saddened her deeply. To add to her tragedy in this period, she had a child, Carol, who was profoundly retarded and was found to be a victim of PKU, a metabolic disease. Later she was found to have a uterine tumor. She was eventually institutionalized in New Jersy. In 1925, the Bucks adopted a child named Janice.

The original farmhouse, now the central section of a much larger structure, was built in 1835. The 2 1/2 story house is constructed of coursed fieldstone. The house is four bays wide and two deep. with the' main entrance, located in the second bay. Two' gable dormers are located on the front and rear slopes of the roof. Chimneys are located on each gable end. A small two story fieldstone addition was made to the west gable end sometime in the late 19th century. When Mrs. Buck purchased the farmstead in 1933, she made extensive alterations and additions to the 19th century farmhouse. A 2 1/2 story fieldstone wing was added to the east gable. Two one story libraries were also added during the 1930' 5.. At present the house is a large composite structure approximately 135 and from 21 - 46 feet wide. Little of the original interiors. remain as these too were extensively modernized during the 1930's. Green Hills Farm remained Pearl Buck's principle residence from 1933 until her death in 1973. The property is today 1ittle changed from the time of her occupancy.
