His research is on novel magnetic materials, such as layered and superconducting materials. Mark is the author of the article on this year's Nobel Prize. Robert Quinn of Cabot, Arkansas was awarded the Bryson Scholarship for students who demonstrate an interest in astronomy, and the Wood Scholarship from Fulbright College, which is for outstanding students majoring in Physics, History, or English. He also holds a physics departmental scholarship, and is a participant in the Fulbright College 4-year Honors Program. Robert's younger brother Michael is a freshman physics major this year, and has a departmental scholarship. Prof. Greg Salamo was given the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award for his success in research. He is a specialist in lasers. The American Physical Society has elected Professors Bill Harter and Art Hobson to APS Fellowship. Harter was cited for his innovative theoretical methods in the study of the spectra of molecules. Hobson was cited in recognition of his contributions in the field of Physics and Society. He edits the newsletter

On 2 Nov 1977, his identification of methanogens, a form of life dating back some 3.5 billion years, was reported from the University of Illinois. Woese had long studied the evolutionary track of DNA and RNA. In 1976, he was approached by his colleague Ralph Wolfe, who presented a group of methane producing organisms. Woese studied their RNA and recognized their lack of the entire oligonucleotide sequences. Methanogens are found in oxygen-deficient environments, and mostly obtain their energy by reducing CO and oxidizing hydrogen, and releasing methane. Leon Max Lederman American physicist who, along with Melvin Schwartz and Jack Steinberger, received the Nobel Prize for Physics in1988 for their joint research and discovery (1960-62) of a new subatomic particle, the muon neutrino. Neutrinos are subatomic particles that have no detectable mass and no electric charge, that travel at the speed of light. The discovery of muon neutrinos, a new type of neutrino, was followed by discoveries by other scientists of a number of different "families" of subatomic particle. Together, they now form a standard model, a scheme that has been used to classify all known elementary particles. He was director of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill. (1979-89).

Extractions: CTP Home Statement of 100 Nobel Laureates 100 Nobel laureates, during the Nobel Peace Prize Centennial Symposium held in Oslo, Norway on December 7, 2001, released the following statement. The symposium was held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize. Their statement is actually a warning that predicts the dependence of world security on environmental and social reforms, which must take place immediately. Peace in the world may only have a chance if we, "the wealthy few," heed this warning. THE STATEMENT The most profound danger to world peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust. It cannot be expected, therefore, that in all cases they will be content to await the beneficence of the rich. If then we permit the devastating power of modern weaponry to spread through this combustible human landscape, we invite a conflagration that can engulf both rich and poor. The only hope for the future lies in co-operative international action, legitimized by democracy.

Extractions: The Nobel Prize in Physics The Nobel Prize is the first international award given yearly since 1901 for achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. The prize consists of a medal, a personal diploma, and a prize amount. In 1968, the Sveriges Riksbank (Bank of Sweden) instituted the Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize. In the beginning, more than three prize winners could share a Nobel Prize, although this was never practiced. Paragraph four of the Statutes of the Nobel Foundation was amended in 1968, restricting the number of prizewinners to only three. Physics is one of the five prize areas mentioned in Alfred Nobel's will. The will was, however, partly incomplete. Nobel simply stated that prizes be given to those who, during the preceding year, "shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" and that one part be given to the person who "shall have made the most important discovery or invention within the field of physics." The Nobel Prizes Awarded to The prize is being awarded with one half jointly to: ZHORES I. ALFEROV
