Extractions: I was born in Neuenkirchen, North-Rhine Westphalia, in the Federal Republic of Germany on May 16, 1950, as the fourth child of Anton and Elisabeth Bednorz. My parents, originating from Silesia, had lost sight of each other during the turbulences of World War II, when my sister and two brothers had to leave home and were moved westwards. I was a latecomer completing our family after its joyous reunion in 1949. During my childhood, my father, a primary school teacher and my mother, a piano teacher, had a hard time to direct my interest to classical music. I was more practical-minded and preferred to assist my brothers in fixing their motorcycles and cars, rather than performing solo piano exercises. At school it was our teacher of arts who cultivated that practical sense and helped to develop creativity and team spirit within the class community, inspiring us to theater and artistic performances even outside school hours. I even discovered my interest in classical music at the age of 13 and started playing the violin and later the trumpet in the school orchestra.

Extractions: in full JOHANNES GEORG BEDNORZ (b. May 16, 1950, West Germany), German physicist who, along with , was awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize for Physics for their joint discovery of superconductivity in certain substances at temperatures higher than had previously been thought attainable. In 1983 the two men began systematically testing newly developed ceramic materials known as oxides in the hope that such substances could act as superconductors. In their efforts Bednorz was the experimenter in charge of the actual making and testing of the oxides. In 1986 the two men succeeded in achieving superconductivity in a barium-lanthanum-copper oxide at a temperature of 35 kelvins (-238 C [-396 F]), 12 K higher than the highest temperature at which superconductivity had previously been achieved in any substance.

Extractions: J. Georg Bednorz was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1987 for his discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in a new class of materials. Drs. Bednorz and Mueller startled the world by reporting superconductivity in a layered, ceramic material at a then-record-high temperature 33 degrees above absolute zero, or Kelvin (roughly -460 degrees Fahrenheit). Their discovery set off an avalanche of research worldwide into related materials that yielded dozens of new superconductors, eventually reaching a transition temperature of 135 Kelvin. Georg Bednorz, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1987 for his discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in a new class of materials. Drs. Mueller and Bednorz startled the world by reporting superconductivity in a layered, ceramic material at a then-record-high temperature 33 degrees above absolute zero, or Kelvin (roughly -460 degrees Fahrenheit). Their discovery set off an avalanche of research worldwide into related materials that yielded dozens of new superconductors, eventually reaching a transition temperature of 135 Kelvin. Born in Basle, Switzerland, on April 20, 1927, Dr. Mueller was educated at the Evangelical College in Schiers, Switzerland, and received his doctorate degree from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in 1958. After spending five years at the Battelle Institute in Geneva as a project manager, he joined the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory in 1963. The University of Zurich appointed him a Lecturer in 1962, Titular Professor in 1970 and Professor in 1987. Dr. Mueller was manager of the physics department of the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory from 1973 to 1985. After that, he devoted his time fully to basic research. He was appointed an IBM Fellow in 1987. He retired from IBM in 1992.

Extractions: NEWS By PETER GWYNNE PHILADELPHIANobel prizes in science normally recognize research of extraordinary excellence, as judged by literature citations to it and awards that have accumulated over a period of years. This year, however, the Nobel committee awarded the physics prize for recent research that illuminated the physical science community with the brilliance of a supernova. New physics laureates J. Georg Bednorz and K. Alex Milller, of IBMs Zurich Research Labora tory, published their seminal paper on high-temperature superconducting ceramics in September 1986 in the German journal Zeitschrift für Physik B : Condensed Matter (vol. 64, 1986, p.189). The paper had been cited once by years end, and just five times during the first two months of this year, according to data gathered by the Institute for Scientific Information, which publishes THE SCIENTIST. However, once the physics community recognized the extraordinary promise of high-temperature superconductors, the papers citations increased exponentially, from 29 in March and April to 82 in May and June to 140 in July and August (see chart below). It is a buildup of extraordinary rapidity, matched only by a relatively few papers reporting such dramatic findings as pulsars, elementary particles and the AIDS virus. The seminal papers recognized by the Nobel committee in chemistry and medicine or physiology show a more normal citation history.
