Extractions: On the recommendation of my professor in experimental physics, Paul Scherrer, I took an assistantship for electron microscopy at the Biophysics Laboratory at the University of Geneva in November 1953. This laboratory was animated by Eduard Kellenberger and it had two prototype electron microscopes requiring much attention. During the late 1950s and early '60s Arber and several others extended the work of an earlier Nobel laureate, Salvador Luria , who had observed that bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) not only induce hereditary mutations in their bacterial hosts but at the same time undergo hereditary mutations themselves. Arber's research was concentrated on the action of protective enzymes present in the bacteria, which modify the DNA of the infecting virus e.g., the restriction enzyme, so-called for its ability to restrict the growth of the bacteriophage by cutting the molecule of its DNA to pieces.

Smith, USA) The tremendous rise of modern genetic engineering is due in very large measure to the three recipients of the 1978 Nobel Prize for Medicine, the Swiss Werner Arber and two Americans, Daniel Nathans and Hamilton Smith, who were jointly honored "in recognition of their discovery of the restriction enzymes and their practical application in molecular genetics". Werner Arber was awarded a diploma in natural sciences by the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in 1953 and became known in the 1960s for his bacteriological experiments at the University of Geneva. He was the first to demonstrate that certain bacteria defend themselves against attacking viruses with special enzymes called restriction enzymes. These enzymes are able to destroy the DNA of viruses by cutting it into little pieces. Arber made another discovery as well. During this defensive process, the bacteria protect their own DNA against these restriction enzymes with other enzymes which change the structure of the DNA by attaching protective enzymes methyl groups (CH,)- to it. These two discoveries led the Swiss scientist to assume that DNA has special areas to which either destructive restriction enzymes or protective enzymes attach. This hypothesis was confirmed experimentally a few years later by Smith and then by Nathans at the
