Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments Inc. (stock: TXN ), who invented the integrated circuit, and Professor Herbert Kroemer of the University of California, Santa Barbara, who devised semiconductor heterostructures, won the physics prize. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences also conferred a physics prize on Russian scientist Zhores I. Alferov, who worked in parallel but separately from Kroemer on heterostructures. The physics award, announced in Stockholm, Sweden, carries a $915,000 prize, of which Kilby will receive half; Kroemer and Alferov will split the other half.

Trick birthday celebration and symposium First ECE graduate to win world's top scientific award By Laura Schmitt U of I electrical engineering alumnus Jack Kilby (BSEE 47) received the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics on December 10 in an award ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden. Kilby was recognized for his part in the invention and development of the integrated circuit (IC), which he first demonstrated on September 12, 1958, while at Texas Instruments. The ECE department will be hosting a campus symposium April 18 to honor Kilby. More information about this event is available at www.ece.uiuc.edu/kilby Kilby shared the prize with Zhores Alferov and Herbert Kroemer, who developed semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed micro- and optoelectronics. Alferov is a researcher at the A.F. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was a visiting scientist at the U of I, working in ECE Professor Nick Holonyak Jr.s lab on heterostructure devices from 1970 to 1971. Kroemer is a researcher at the University of California at Santa Barbara. All three inventors work has laid a stable foundation for modern information technology. The birth date of the [IC] is one of the most important birth dates in the history of technology, said Tord Claeson, member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, at the prize award ceremony. Kilbys invention enabled the microelectronics field to grow to become the basis of all modern technology. ICs, or microchips, are pervasive in such things as computers, space probes, cars, medical diagnostic equipment, and electronic watches.

Alferov has been awarded his prize for "developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed- and opto-electronics." With the Russian editorial office of Institute of Physics Publishing situated in the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute, Professor Alferov has had close ties with the Institute for many years, and regularly publishes his work in the Institute journals, Semiconductor Science and Technology, and Nanotechnology. Currently, he has three papers in press with the Institute of Physics. The Institute's Russian editorial office was established in 1990 and gathers scientific papers from Russia for Institute of Physics journals. Scientific staff at the Ioffe have worked closely with the Institute for many years. Relations between the Institute of Physics and the Ioffe were reinforced when Professor Alferov came to speak at a conference of all editors of the Institute journals held at the University of Bath in 1999. He gave a plenary lecture about nano-scale physics research in Russia and captivated his audience with an account of the history and politics of science funding in his country.
