Over the holiday period I have been reflecting that these are propitious times for those of us engaged in large-scale educational reform. For the first time policy, practice and research knowledge are in alignment and are actively learning from each other. And it is working! Standards of student achievement are rising and there is worldwide interest in the way in which our Key Stage strategies have integrated teaching frameworks with research-based pedagogy and intensive staff development. The Literacy and Numeracy strategies have for example emphasised the importance of high quality whole class instruction and the research on teaching effectiveness. The KS3 strategies also highlighted the importance of student thinking skills and assessment for learning approaches. But there is still much to do. No one can afford to be complacent, for as Alvin Toffler put it, education needs to reflect a vision of the future.

Ambler Whenever I start working with a new language one of the first things that I try to do is determine what coding standards and guidelines for that language exist. When I first started working with Java in the Autumn of 1995 I couldn't find any. When I went looking again a year later I found some, listed later in this web page, but they weren't sufficient for my needs. The information that I found was fairly good, for the most part, but some of it was contradictory and none of it was complete. Furthermore, some of the papers were not based on sound software engineering principles, but were instead oriented towards banging out code very quickly.
