Women's wheelchair basketball team hopes to play mens' teams
Photos and story by Jennifer Mullholand
The Daily Illini
It's 6:45 a.m. The gym is full of bright-eyed "ballers," ready to get a jump on the day. But these are not typical players. These women, in spite of their physical disabilities, will give any men's team a run for their money. The University women's wheelchair basketball team won the 2001-2002 Wheelchair National Basketball Association women's championship last March in Gainesville, Fla. It was the 10th championship for the Illinois wheelchair basketball program in the past 27 years of competition. The women's squad is consistently one of the top two or three teams in the division, said head coach Mike Frogley. "It's seen as the best place in the country to play wheelchair basketball," Frogley said. This year's team returned all five starters: graduate students Janna Crawford, Jen Warkins and Patty Cisneros, junior Christina Ripp and senior Stephanie Wheeler. Ripp and Wheeler are also members of the USA National Women's wheelchair basketball team. The five will have the opportunity to play in the 2004 Para Olympics in Athens, Greece, which will take place two weeks after the summer Olympics. The goal of this year's team is to repeat as national champions, Frogley said.

The men's and women's wheelchair basketball teams won the game, but not the championship, Wednesday night when the Illinois Student Government unanimously passed an assembly resolution to support their request for varsity sport status.
Since the wheelchair basketball program began more than 50 years ago, members have been petitioning the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics for equal campus athletic privileges, specifically varsity status.
In the late 1970s, wheelchair basketball athletes received eligibility for varsity letters and the Huff Academic Award. More recently in the early '90s, the administration granted wheelchair basketball members eligibility for certain out-of-state tuition waivers.
Despite these concessions that place the program beyond club-sport status, the wheelchair basketball program still lacks the equal funds, services and facilities that benefit varsity sports.

Schmaltzriedt is another of the bright, young prospects for Portland basketball. In only four years of wheelchair basketball, Schmaltzriedt has developed into one of the best players in the Pacific Northwest. His combination of size, quickness, and tenacity make him a great defender and creates match up problems in defending him. He has led Portland in scoring for the last two seasons. At the end of last season Schmaltzriedt graduated from Portland State with a double major in Fine Arts and Graphic Design. Last summer he had his first gallery show. In addition to being a promising artist, he is also a musician, playing the guitar and writing songs. Some his work is available for viewing on-line at: www.schmalzriedt.tripod.com. OPVA Member.

Tactics are everything in this wonderful sport
Clare Strange GB wheelchair basketball star
Britain's wheelchair basketball star Clare Strange gives a basic guide to one of the fastest growing sports in the world. I've been playing wheelchair basketball for over four years and I can say it's just a fantastic sport. In 1997 I broke my back in a horse-riding accident and a year later was playing for the GB wheelchair team at the World Championship in Sydney. And then two years after that I was back in Sydney for the Paralympics. I had never played basketball before but I worked so hard on my physio. And playing for the Milton Keynes Aces wheelchair basketball club really helped. It's not that different from able-bodied basketball though. Apart from a few different foul rules because of the wheelchair. One of the things that can seem confusing in the game is the points classification system for the players. Clare battles for the ball at the 2000 Paralympics
Each player is given a points total that is measured by their disability.

"Chuck's Wheels," a video production created by SFSU graduate students, recently won first prize in the Christophers national video contest for college students. The Christophers award honors student work that shows acts of service, courage and inspiration. The video production was one of 456 entries. The award-winning work tells the story of how Chuck Gill (above right) overcame a paralyzing illness to become one of the top players of the Golden State Road Warriors in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. The video also highlights Gill's work as a driver for "Meals on Wheels," delivering meals to elderly San Franciscans (below left). Producer Joy Valera and her team, all graduate students in broadcast and electronic communication arts, created the video for KTVU-TV's "Bay Area People" program as part of their coursework for Professor Ron Compesi's advanced production class. Compesi has worked with KTVU Community Affairs Director Rosy Chu for the last decade to produce community affairs stories for the Oakland-based station. Every year KTVU shows the best of those stories, including, this year, "Chuck's Wheels," which ran last March. "What is particularly gratifying about this project is to see the enthusiasm with which our students seek out stories about individuals who have made a positive difference in the Bay Area communities in which we live," Compesi said.

Front Page Previous Story Next Story National Wheelchair Basketball Athletes Bring Sports Passion to NIH By Anne Philips and Carlton Coleman For only the second time in recent memory, the parking lot in front of Bldg. 1 was cleared to make way for street ball. The Maryland Ravens, a team of nationally ranked wheelchair athletes, played a vigorous game of basketball against a squad of enthusiastic NIH Police. Earnest but new to the game, the police soon showed themselves to be unprepared for the physical and cognitive demands of wheelchair propulsion and play. The exhibition game inaugurated NIH's annual observance of National Disability Awareness Month. On behalf of NIH, Stephen A. Ficca, director of the Office of Research Services, greeted the Ravens and opened the exhibition to a spirited crowd. The Ravens easily trounced the NIH squad 51 to 49, despite the police starting out with an unearned 40-point lead. While wheelchair basketball is similar to the running game, it is also characterized by its own unique style. The high-intensity sport reveals its own system of attack, possessing a unique dribbling rule to accommodate the movement of athletes in wheelchairs. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the game. A second game (see sidebar below), pitting the Ravens against another NIH squad, Double Helix, was held later in the Clinical Center.

Le Championnat Canadien Junior et Mini en Fauteuil Roulant 2000 de la CWBA About Wheelchair Basketball
History of Wheelchair Sport
Prior to World War II, opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sports did not exist. As a result of the war, there was a drastic rise in the number of young men with disabilities including spinal cord injuries (SCI) and amputees. There was a need for these newly returned veterans to do rehabilitative work to help them adjust to life with their new injuries. One of the aspects of rehabilitation was to improve the individual’s ability to maneuver their wheelchair and to overcome obstacles. Often, this was accomplished through the use of adapted sport activities. As the young men became more efficient at using their wheelchairs, they desired a sense of normalcy to their lives. The evolution of rehabilitative exercises to adapted sports thus began. In 1944, Sir Ludwig Guttmann laid the foundation for the development of wheelchair sports.

http://www.sportingwheelies.org.au/sport/basketball.htm
Wheelchair Basketball is a spectacular team sport modelled on the able-bodied game of basketball. It is played on standard basketball courts with normal height rings and backboards. The only major difference is that Wheelchair Basketballers substitute wheels for legs. The game can be played by anyone, including able-bodied athletes. Most of the centres have spare chairs so that friends and family can join in the fun. Wheelchair Basketball is perhaps the most developed of all of the Association's programmes. The programme boasts opportunities for junior players, senior athletes, newcomers and social players at all levels of competition.
Competitions / Programmes Regions Brisbane
Social competition is held every Monday night at the Clem Jones Centre in Carina.
There are 2 B-Grade teams and 4 A-Grade teams, with competition starting at 6.50pm. Cost is $60 per season per member.
