Related Resources: Parent Link Safe Sledding Listen to the article The thrill of whisking down a steep, snow-covered hill has made sledding a favorite winter past time. However, spills that occur while sledding can be serious. Here are some simple things you need to know to help your child avoid a sledding injury:
  • Never allow children to sled in or near streets or automobile traffic. Watch weather conditions closely. Icy conditions mean more speed and great potential for injury. Choose an area that is safe for sledding. Make sure the hill or run has no potential to project your child into traffic or creek beds or rivers regardless of the weather conditions. Make sure the area is free of obvious hazards such as trees and utility poles. Rocks and stumps beneath the snow can also pose a hidden threat. Choose a sled that allows for steering. Sleds that lack a steering mechanism and/or a had surface to ride upon should be avoided. To lessen the risk of head injury, children should sled feet first or sitting up. Dress your child in warm and protective clothing. Heavy duty gloves and boots help protect your child from cuts on his hands and feet.

"Wilderness Luxury" Dog Sledding Expeditions
in Algonquin Park, Ontario
After meeting the dog sled teams, at the edge of Algonquin Park, you will be given instructions on the proper technique of controlling a dog sled and a team of eager sled dogs. You will help harness the Huskies, hook them up to the dogsleds, and issue a command..."Mush"! Off you will race as the dogs strain at their harnesses, happy to be pulling a dog sled once again. After they settle down into their natural pace, you will steer them into the forests surrounding Algonquin Park, navigating twisting trails and wide open frozen lakes. On the flat parts of the trail you can relax with the wind blowing in your face, and watch the majestic winter forest silently glide by! In the evening we get to enjoy the "wilderness luxury" of the Algonquin Wilderness Eco-Lodge deep inside the forests of the Algonquin region. But first, everyone must help out with the chores. The first thing to do is look after our hard working sled dogs! This comprises of unhooking them from their dogsleds, feeding and watering them. We also have to make sure they have suitable shelter from the cold Algonquin night wind, and store our dog sleds away. We are then free to relax, go snowshoeing, or partake in our winter ritual - bathing suit "snow angels"! Then jump into the outdoor hot tub or sauna! After enjoying a gourmet home cooked meal we can sit around the old fashioned wood stove and exchanging travellers' tales and ghost stories! The wood stove and wood furnace ensure that we're all toasty warm at night!

Snow Sledding Safety
I well remember speeding down a hill near my childhood home on my trusty sled. Two suggestions can make this thrill a safer one for kids. When the snow falls, your child's bike helmet should become an even –more important sledding helmet (over a warm hat). This simple addition to the sledding adventure can save your child's head now (and perhaps prevent Alzheimer's later ). The other tip: enjoy the snow with your child! According to a 1999 study by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the US Forest Service, adult involvement dramatically slashes the sledding injury rate. Make safe snow memories together!

Illini State Park is the kind of park you think of when you think of big picnics and family gatherings. With its rustic Civilian Conservation Corps buildings and riverside picnic areas, Illini State Park offers beautiful views and a sense of history not found in many other parks. Named for the native Americans who once inhabited the area, Illini State Park is located south of the Illinois River from Marseilles and U.S. Route 6. The northern edge of the 510-acre park is bordered by the Great Falls of the Illinois River. In just two miles, the river drops three feet, creating beautiful roaring rapids. The east end of the park is the former site of the prestigious Marsatawa Country Club. History Several reminders of America's Industrial Age can be seen at Illini State Park. The area is part of an old glacial feature called the Marseilles Moraine and is underlaid by 100 feet of coal. A large coal mine one mile south of the park supplied coal to Marseilles industries until World War II. The Illinois Traction System, an interurban electric transit system that ran from Chicago to Princeton, was one of those industries. The Marseilles powerhouse for the ITS can still be seen on the north bank of the river.
