SKELETON SLEDDING INFORMATION Introduction: like to check and see if people are waiting to ambush them out in the woods. I look back on those days a lot and really do miss working security at the concerts. (All told I did it for about seven years, although they weren't sequential.) Anyway, one of my co-workers was wearing an Empire State Games sweatshirt one evening. For those of you who aren't local, the Empire State Games are our New York States sports championships. They're held annually in both winter and summer in a wide variety of events. Since there are millions of people in our state, and these are the championships, you've got to be good to get in for almost anything. (Well, usually. There are exceptions and I'm the proof. But I'm coming to that story later.) So this meant he was good in his sport. More importantly, to me, his sweatshirt said "Bobsledding." "Wow!" I cried, "I've always wanted to try Bobsledding or Luging!! How do you do that?!" And he told me... Of course, he also told me about something called "skeleton" that I'd never heard of. The next winter I was an Empire State Games skeleton slider. I wish I could have continued with it, but a conspiracy of geography and insurance-less poverty kept me out of the sport until a return in 1998. Nevertheless, skeleton sliding was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

Position Statement Sledding Safety Every year, thousands of youths and adults are injured sledding down hills in city parks, streets and resort areas. In 1995, hospital emergency rooms treated 54,727 injuries related to sleds, toboggans, and inflated or plastic tubes and disks used in sledding, according to the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The medical, legal, insurance costs were $365 million. Half of all emergency visits were for injuries to arms and legs; 17 percent, spine; 15 percent, head; and 11 percent facial injuries. Two-thirds of the injuries were sustained by youths age 14 and younger. Younger children have proportionally larger heads and higher centers of gravity than do older children and adolescents. When the injuries to youths and young adults age 15-24 are included, the 0-24 age group accounts for 85 percent of the total injuries and more than 80 percent of the total cost. From 1991 through 1995, there were 250,361 injuries related to sledding treated in hospital emergency rooms. The economic impact was $1.79 billion.
