  • 94. What Is Kyudo?
ABOUT kyudo, No acceptance. The essence of modern kyudo is said tobe synonymous with the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty.
    http://www.asahi-archery.co.jp/wakyu/about.html
ABOUT KYUDO No one knows exactly when the term Kyudo came into existance, but it was not until the late nineteeth century when the practice centered almost exclusively around individual that the term gained general acceptance. The essence of modern Kyudo is said to be synonymous with the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty. Truth in Kyudo is manifested in shooting that is pure and right-minded, where the three elements of attitude, movement, and technique unite in a state of perfect harmony. A true shot in Kyudo is not just one that hits the center of the target, but one where the arrow can be said to exist in the target before its release. Goodness encompasses such qualities as courtesy, compassion, morality, and non-aggression. In Kyudo, goodness is shown by displaying proper attitude and behavior in all situations. A good Kyudo archer is a person who maintains his or her composure and grace even in times of great stress or conflict. Beauty both enhances life and stimulates the spirit. In Kyudo, truth and goodness, themselves, are considered beautiful. Beauty can also be found in the exquisite grace and artistry of the Japanese bow and the elegance of the traditional archer's attire. It is also present in the refined etiquette that surrounds the Kyudo ceremony. Etiquette, which is simply common courtesy and respect for others, is an essential element of Kyudo practice.

    http://www.brookes.ac.uk/schools/social/Kyudo/brookes/home.html
KYUDO CLASS AT OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY Thanks to the support of the Japan Interest Group, a beginners' class in Kyudo has been started on Wednesday evenings (6-8pm) at the Gypsy Lane Campus. The class is under the supervision of Liam O'Brien, Kyoshi 7th Dan, resident teacher to the London Kyudo Society and its senior members. It is open to the public as well as staff and students of the university. Kyudo is not simply archery. It is the art of finding the relationship between the bow, the body, and the spirit and uniting it into an harmonious whole. To balance all these elements in the shooting situation makes kyudo both demanding and challenging. Japanese traditional arts and disciplines are about self-cultivation through the discipline of a prescribed regime and are not suitable for those unwilling to accept such an approach.
Traditionally, kyudo is practised in a kyudojo , which is a simple timber building usually set in a park or garden, with a polished wooden shooting area (shajo) that forms the stage for the performance of shooting. At Oxford Brookes the facilities only allow for basic form training and practice on a straw practice butt (makiwara shaho) For formal shooting over the standard 28 meter distance (kinteki shaho),

    http://www.yutaka-machi.com/kyudo.htm
What is Kyudo? Kyudo - the way of the bow - is one of the oldest of Japan's martial arts. It combines the Mind ( attitude), the Body (movement) and the Bow (technique) All three must be in perfect harmony in order for an individual to achieve success in Kyudo. What is the Hassetsu and why is it important? The Hassetsu is the eight basic steps required to release the arrow. These eight steps reflect the knowledge and experience of past generations of master archers and are the easiest, most efficient way to learn Kyudo technique and shooting procedure. The Hassetsu: 1. Ashibumi (footing) This is the foundation of the Kyudo Hassetsu. The feet are spread about the length of one's arrow with the big toes in line with the center of the target and the feet at an angle of 60 degrees. Equal pressure should be applied to both feet. Balance is the key to any martial art. 2. Dozukuri (correcting the posture) This is where the archer turns his attention to the upper body once the feet are set. Here is where the three-cross-relationship is first observed. The shoulders, hips, and feet are held in line with one another, parallel to the floor.
