  • The pictures from the NCKF 2003 New Year's Tournament are in! The last set of pictures of a single target need a bit of explaining. There are four holes in this target (the 4th is hard to see because it is in the bottom of the middle thin black target band). Those four holes are impressive. Performing well in a tournament is always hard but performing well in a shootoff is especially difficult. There were two ties in the final standing: 3rd place in overall hits between Kevin Lo and Jon McAllister and 3rd place in the "B" group between Ted Triant and Alex Connell. In both shootoffs both contestents hit the target which was a closest to the center competition. In both shootoffs the second shooter was closer to the center than the first which made for the most exciting shootoff we've ever had at an NCKF event. Congratulations to the winners and especially the shootoff contestents for remaining cool under the pressure of competition!
You can see the pictures by clicking here

  • The pictures from the Shiseikan 2002 Shukushakai are in! Since only Belinda passed a promotion test during the year all the dojo members performed a celebration shooting, shukusha, for her and then, Belinda performed a toreisha (return thank you shooting) which also served as a nosha, closing ceremonial shooting, for the session and the year. A bonnenkai was then held at a local Japanese resturant.

    Books I recommend
These book help, but nothing replaces a good teacher Morisawa, J. S. 1984. The Secret of the Target. Routledge, New York and London.
This is the better book because it explains things in great detail. I like this book very much. Kyudo Manual. (1992?) Volume 1. Principles of Shooting (revised edition). All Nippon Kyudo Federation.
This book explains much more about etiquette and less about actually shooting the arrow, despite its title. It is available directly from ANKF for 3,000 yen. You can write or fax and they will send the book and an invoice. Volumes 2 and 3 are not translated.

Part one - what got me going
I first started to learn kyudo in 1988 when friends at work (University of Tsukuba) invited me to join their club. The club - called the Sakura Kyudo Kai - was held at the university kyudo dojo, quite close to my department. The members consisted of all kinds of people, not necessarily connected to the university. Any new member was welcome. I was lucky that the university had a rather salubrious 12 target dojo, with a small three target dojo at the side for special purposes, including the Sakura club. I became good friends with the professor of kyudo, Mori-sensei, and he allowed me to come and practice any time, so I often came lunchtimes.

    20. The Meishin Kyudojo Homepage - What Is Kyudo?
What Is kyudo? kyudo, which literally means The Way of the Bow, isconsidered by many to be the purest of all the martial ways.
    http://www.kyudo.com/kyudo-k.html
Click on these icons to go to their respective homepages Home Who We Are Kyudo History ... Resources What Is Kyudo? Kyudo, which literally means The Way of the Bow, is considered by many to be the purest of all the martial ways. In the past the Japanese bow was used for hunting, war, court ceremonies, games, and contests of skill. The old word for Japanese archery was kyujutsu (bow technique) which encompassed the skills and techniques of the warrior archer. Some of the ancient schools, known as ryu , survive today, along with the ancient ceremonies and games, but the days where the Japanese bow was used as a weapon are long past. Modern kyudo is practiced primarily as a method of physical, moral, and spiritual development. No one knows exactly when the term kyudo came into being but it was not until the late nineteeth century when practice centered almost exclusively around individual practice that the term gained general acceptance. The essence of modern kyudo is said to be synonymous with the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty. Truth in kyudo is manifested in shooting that is pure and right-minded, where the three elements of attitude, movement, and technique unite in a state of perfect harmony. A true shot in kyudo is not just one that hits the center of the target, but one where the arrow can be said to exist in the target before its release.
