    Koryu Books and Resources
Winter 2002, V.10.6 Koryu, (literally, "old style") martial arts is relatively rare in the West, but it is making inroads as more and more students study in Japan and return to their homes with valid teaching licenses. There's been a dearth of really good koryu books available until recently, most especially due to the efforts of Diane and Meik Skoss, at Koryu Books . But there are also other resources. If you end up in the used book street in Kanda, Tokyo, there's a couple of books you should try to dig up. We've included Japanese language and English language books in case you want to wade through the Japanese to dig up some really great gems of knowledge. You can also check out buyubooks.com for rare and hard-to-find books in Japanese. Note: (J) denotes the book is written in Japanese. Furyu the Budo Journal wmuromoto@hotmail.com

Designated "Type D" and nicknamed "Koryu", the new design was somewhat larger than the earlier types, featured a more powerful diesel engine and had improved operating endurance. The "Koryu" also had a five-man crew, two more than in the Type C, but the same armament of two 45cm (17.7") diameter torpedoes. The Type D midgets displaced about 60 tons and were 86 feet long. Propelled by a 500 horsepower electric motor, maximum submerged speed was 16 knots. On the surface, with an 150 HP diesel charging the electric batteries, speed was 8 knots and range about 1000 nautical miles. As with the earlier types, individual boats had alpha-numeric names in the "HA" series. The the first Type D boat

My concern in Koryu koryu Koryu onmun chaemun onmun is a reference to the Korean text in contrast with the Chinese text, chaemun ). During the pre-modern days of the Chosun dynasty, this provided a rare and significant occasion for a woman to engage in highly sophisticated linguistic performance in Confucian culture. Avoiding a direct documentary style, this film tries to translate the semiotic into sound and mobile images.

Why Koryu? Does rare really mean better
    by Kim Taylor
By chance, and by the great virtue of hanging around the dojo for a couple of decades I have managed to pick up a couple of koryu sword arts. Koryu, for those who aren't concerned with the esoterica of the Japanese weapon arts, means "old school" and is usually defined as those arts formed before the Meiji resoration, pre 1868. One of the schools I've managed to practice is the Niten Ichi-ryu which is pretty rarely practiced in Japan and similarly so in the West. The school is, however, quite well known since it was founded by Miyamoto Musashi. As a result, I must get an average of 3 emails, calls or letters a month from all over the world asking "Is there a Niten Ichi-ryu school in my city?" or even "Can I be your uchi-deshi?". The answer is always, of course no, but I am left mystified as to why anyone would want to study an art that is so rare.
Kim Taylor and Mike Castellani doing niten ichi-ryu Now I've been around for a couple of years and have seen "secret arts" come and go, like Judo, Karate, Kung fu, Ninja, and Brazillian JuJutsu, all in their turn, and I know that folks do seem to flock to the "new kid on the block". I think it's the search for the secret weapon, that technique that nobody has ever seen which will therefore work every time in the back alleyway. I can also appreciate the desire to "get in on the ground floor", after all the first guys in tend to end up at the top of the pile, and get there a lot easier than those who come afterward. Rank tests always seem to get tougher as the years pass and the heirarchy gets filled up. I can even understand to a certain extent the romantic notion that we're going to "preserve the cultural heritage" of a rare martial art by keeping it alive for another generation. What I can't understand is why anyone would actually want to bother with any of that.

    The Iaido Newsletter April 2000
    Koryu Budo, Then and Now
by Peter Boylan Many people seem to think that the various koryu budo are practiced in exactly the same way today that they were practiced 200, 300, even 500 years ago. After all, they reason, the tradition has been faithfully preserved since the founder was inspired, whether by some divinity, a whack on the head, or a sudden realization of how not to get whacked on the head. Through careful practice of the kata that make up the ryuha’s teachings and traditions, people believe that numerous generations of students and teachers have maintained the tradition exactly as it was in the Edo or even Sengoku period. While this is a wonderful idea, it is far from the truth. Arms races predate the existence of mankind. As any predator develops effective strategies for capturing prey, those prey animals will develop new defenses. One has only to look at the simultaneous development of carnivorous dinosaurs and the improvements that occurred in their prey species to see this. The “koryu budo” or “ancient schools” of Japanese budo are much the same. Those schools that existed during the civil war of the Sengoku era focused on battlefield techniques for use against opponents in armor. Ryuha which were founded during the peace of the Edo era most frequently don’t even bother to include any techniques for armored combat. What’s interesting is that most Sengoku era schools that do maintain armored teachings have minimized their practice, and rarely get out the armor to train in. This makes a lot sense when it’s considered.

Aiki News #98, 1994, 21:1 Aikido practitioners often think of karate in terms of sparring competitions and kata demonstrations, but the original style of karate is quite different. On August 5th, 1992 we visited the dojo of Kenji Ushiro, who practices a classical style of karate, based on the Okinawan art before its introduction to mainland Japan. Although the kata of Shindokai koryu karate can be used in actual fighting situations, the ultimate secret teaching of this school is to not make enemies. In this article, we are pleased to introduce Mr. Ushiro and his sensei, Nikichi Zaha, head instructor of the Shindokai. In future issues we plan to present the five basic kata of Shindo-ryu in a way in which we hope will benefit aikido practitioners. When you start to learn something, you must be motivated. But although motivation is very important, there are even more important factors such as the level of the teacher, the quality of the school or system, your environment, and your values and beliefs. It is particularly difficult for a beginner to find out what an instructor's level actually is. However, the first style and teacher you select are likely to form the foundation of your technique, and the techniques you learn first are not easy to cast aside. Thus, the selection of your first teacher sets the stage for your later development. In other words, instructors have important responsibilities towards their students, and should be aware of this fact.
