(September 15, 2000 2:31 a.m. EDT http://www.sportserver.com ) Sydney Olympics organizer hope that in the next 50 days, people overflow down with Olympics pride Down Under. They hope to have opening ceremonies for the Games, scheduled for Sept. 15, have all the pageantry and excitement of previous ceremonies at previous Games. Fifty days ahead of these games, pagentry and excitement weren't exactly what people were thinking of. "People from overseas are more excited," said Maria Nori, who works at an ice cream shop on Bondi Beach, site of Olympic beach volleyball. "People here are not that excited yet. "I'm excited because I love volleyball. But I haven't heard anything here about the Olympics."

The University of Illinois is kicking off a program to honor female athletes who competed for the school prior to 1974. The UI athletic department is seeking to locate as many of these former student-athletes as possible. Illini To Kick Off ILLINOIS 3D University plans to honor women athletes from prior to 1974-75 Oct. 16, 2002 ILLINOIS 3D SIGN-UP FORM The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics is proud to announce the Illinois 3D - Dreams, Desire, and Dedication program to "commemorate visionaries in women's athletics." Under the leadership of Dr. Karol Kahrs, the University of Illinois officially began varsity athletics for women during the 1974-75 academic year. But women competed intercollegiately on behalf of Illinois for years prior. "These women played a major role in laying the foundation for our current varsity women's programs," said Athletic Director Ron Guenther. "They are 'unsung players' who deserve to receive the same recognition as those athletes who had the opportunity to earn a varsity letter while they attended Illinois." Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women's Administrator Kelly Landry added, "These women are an important part of the Fighting Illini family. Volleyball Team Rights The Ship To Reach B-W Invitational Semifinals (Sept. 8) The John Carroll University volleyball team has apparently righted the ship. After an 0-3 start, the Blue Streaks have won five of their last six matches, including three of the four they played in reaching the championship bracket of the Marcia French Memorial Invitational. In the two-day event which concluded today at Baldwin-Wallace College, JCU captured Pool B by defeating Kenyon, Case Western Reserve and Mount Union. The match against the Purple Raiders was particularly dramatic in that the Blue Streaks rallied from 0-2 down to win their first five-set match since September 25, 1999. JCU was then paied to face Mount Union again in the championship bracket semifinals, losing to the Purple Raiders in three games. Beth Grzybowski and Molly Barb were both selected to the All-Tournament team. he two playes combined for 121 kills and 148 digs over the weekend. But the weather was also a reminder that pleasure boating in the San Juan Islands is about to kick into high gear. As the sun gets higher, so do the spirits. Salukis kick off home opener Friday
Released September 16, 1999 Carbondale, Ill. Southern Illinois University Carbondale's volleyball team will kick off its home opener this Friday at 7 p.m. against Wichita State in Davies Gym. This is the first in a series of five home matches for SIU. The Salukis, who have won every home opener since the 1994 season, are looking to keep the streak alive by pulling out of their six-game losing slump. According to head coach Sonya Locke, the team has spent this past week working hard to correct the costly mistakes made in the 18 game losing span. "Right now we have been concentrating on what we need to do to win," said Locke. "We've been working hard on defense, passing and serving. I think those are the three things that need to remain strong to be successful on any level." Wichita State, which is lingering at the bottom of the Missouri Valley Conference standings, has recorded a disappointing 1-7 overall mark. However, the Shockers are expected to unleash some surprise attacks on the Salukis with juniors Jan Meloy and Amy Smith. Ranked fifth in the Valley in killing average, Meloy has stunned fans by averaging 3.93 kills/game and 2.56 digs/game, while Smith has put up a shield to compile 32 blocks on the season.

Post were battling for the NCAA Division II women's lacrosse title, the Aggies were at home hardly befitting for a team that ranked No. 3 in the national coaches' poll and that had gone undefeated against its D-II opponents. As the only D-II lacrosse school on the West, UC Davis had few opportunities to play the top teams in the South region. The Aggies beat 2001 champion C.W. Post in a memorable 9-8 battle, then swept through North region members East Stroudsburg, Adelphi and Lock Haven. However, without more region games on the schedule, UC Davis was unable to build its case for a berth in the national tournament.
