Introduction
It's the 24th century and mankind has pretty much got the solar system sussed. The invention of the fusion drive has opened up the outer planets and beyond to humanities' inquisitive probings. Even better, the drive uses water as fuel. Things are looking pretty rosy for human kind. Performing the role of the Watford Gap service station of the stars is the Jovian moon Europa. Covered in ice, it provides a perfect source of fuel for outward bound starships. The ice is mined from the moon's interior and hurtled towards the ships using a Magrail accelerator. Europa now has three cities and a network of mines on its surface and its miners are gradually spreading through the rest of the Jovian moon system. Then one day miners detect a hollow cavern in the centre of Europa. Forgetting what curiosity did to the cat, the miners crack open this cavern to have a look. Unfortunately, what these latter day seven dwarfs find is a hibernating alien race. Eons old, the aliens are understandable peeved at being roused before the alarm clock has gone off and, since like all sentient life, they are not at their best in the morning, instantly lash out. Before you can say 'hi-ho!', the aliens have obliterated the offending miners and for an encore have reduced Europa City, the main settlement on Europa to rubble. The game opens just after the alien's bout of early morning stroppiness. The inhabitants of Europa know that there has been a massive seismic disturbance but they don't know the cause. They also know that Europa City is no longer answering its telephone calls.

The exact amount of sympathy you can expect to get for your pathetic little problems in this cold, hard, Bugblatter Beast eat Bugblatter Beast universe. Wake up, Bubbie! This is the real Galaxy and none of your mothers work here! As the great Altairian philosopher Bobo the Plutarch once said, "Laugh and the Galaxy laughs with you. Cry, and some really heinously unhoopy Vogon will rip out your vital internal organs and shove them up your nose just because he's suffering from a little post-lunch gas and wants to work off his frustration." So this is my advice to you: fight hard. Drink hard. Walk alone. Pack a blaster that can take out a large metropolitan area. If you meet a strag, kick him in the shin, and then while he's distracted, gouge out one eye and spit in the other one. If you meet another hitchhiker, first peel off all his skin with a Skinsu Skin Peeler (TM) and then cover him with an inflammable substance and set him on fire. Especially if that hitchhiker is my SOB of an ex-boyfriend, Fluffy Ziffle, last seen in a mint green El Camino Megajalopy headed for Golgafrincham.

Boyle's Law and Absolute Zero and Cartesian Diver and Model of Lung
Description:
There is a "Boyle's Law Unit" that consists of a large syringe connected to a pressure gauge on a clear plastic stage that is meant to be viewed through an overhead projector. As the syringe is used to increase or decrease the volume of air in the syringe, the pressure gauge shows a decrease or increase in pressure. Students can be asked to formulate Boyle's Law using data from the "Unit". Also the "Unit" includes a bulb that can be emmersed in boiling water, ice bath, and liquid nitrogen to show the relationship between temperature and pressure.
Ideal Gas Law: PV = nRT Boyle's Law: V approx. = 1/P Charles Law: the volume of a gas at a constant pressure is directly proportional to the absolute temperature.
Liquid nitrogen is - 196 o C Absolute zero is - 273.15 o C (0 o K) Acetone/dry ice slurry is approximately - 78 o C
About the Boyle's law unit and the absolute temperature bulb: On the bulb when the valve is up it is open. Down is closed. Keep valve down/closed while cooling/heating bulb. Open the valve to make the measurement.

Absolute Zero Absolute Zero is based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The band has existed for a little over three years now and in that time has written music that has led to the creation of their debut album ‘Spirit’ . Their music weaves melody, moods and rhythm in the inimitable Absolute Zero style. ‘Spirit’ has been remixed and is being relaunched through the Sheer Sound group. Absolute Zero are: Angelo Angelos (Piano, Electric Piano)
Angelo left his vocation as an Electrical Engineer in 1996 to pursue a lifelong dream to play music professionally. He had been performing and studying music as a sideline for ten years until he came to a point in his life when the voice inside was speaking too loudly to be ignored. And so he took the plunge and followed his heart. Two years later he met Mervin through a mutual friend and they began to collaborate on original material that became the music of Absolute Zero. It is a project inspired and fuelled by an overwhelming desire to express a truth that was long ignored in Angelo’s life. Angelo studied Electrical Engineering at Wits University and then went on to receive his Masters degree in Electrical Engineering at Harvard University in Boston, USA.

Scientific American "Shachtman recounts the history of cold with passion and clarity."
The New York Times Review of Books In a sweeping yet concise scientific adventure story, Tom Shachtman takes us on a journey in which the extraordinary secrets of cold are teased apart and mastered, bringing advances in civilization and comfort. Starting in the 1600s with an alchemist's attempt to air-condition Westminster Abbey, the incredible story includes the invention of thermometers and scales, the sale of Walden Pond ice to tropical countries by nineteenth-century merchants, and the pursuit of absolute zero by scientists who competed with as much fervor as those racing to the poles. Tom Shachtman has written 25 books, including the acclaimed

Nowhere Man
ABSOLUTE ZERO
originally aired 8/28/95
Well written, brilliantly cast and with the best premise of any series for the 1995-1996 season, the pilot of Nowhere Man had a smashing premiere with great ratings and glittering reviews. Bruce Greenwood plays Thomas Veil, a journalistic photographer whose whole life is erased by some giant master plan. In the opening episode Veil - quite literally - loses his identity one night over dinner and begins to mentally unravel when he discovers his wife is part of whatever's happening. In the sanitarium where he's forcefully placed he slowly realizes that he's actually the victim of some massive conspiracy. He manages to break out, only to find that both his best friend and his Mother have been coldly eliminated. The episode ends chillingly with Thomas Veil alone in the desert, unable to trust the one man who offers him a ride. The premiere was stunning subtly written and delicately acted to create with uneasy momentum the frightening concept that this everyman - just like you or me - could simply be erased. Tobe Hooper's consummate direction used eerie effects that would become themes as the series progressed and Bruce Greenwood reached a heightened level of acting as the strong but vulnerably "veiled" hero. The only possible drawbacks seem to be the show's placement on the obscure UPN network and its unfortunate time slot opposite Monday Night Football.

Fermions vs Bosons Near Absolute Zero The above figure shows false-color images of ultracold lithium-atom clouds, produced by physicists at Rice University. Lithium has two stable isotopes, one of which is a boson (lithium-7), the other of which is a fermion (lithium-6). Bosons and fermions are the two fundamental types of quantum particles found in nature. The lithium species are very similar in many respects; for example, they contain the same configuration of electrons, making them chemically identical. But in a low-temperature environment, dramatic differences appear between the lithium because of the fact that they comprise two fundamentally different kinds of particles. The Rice researchers trapped the two lithium species together in the same cloud and photographed them one after the other. As it turned out, the bosons (lithium-7) are used to help cool the fermions (lithium-6) down to a low temperature. The atom clouds are shown at three different temperatures: 810, 510 and 240 nano-Kelvin. One nano-Kelvin is an extremely cold temperatureit's a billionth of a degree above absolute zero, which is -460 degrees Fahrenheit. As the temperature gets colder, one can see that the boson gas, shown on the left, coalesces into a compact cloud, while the size of the fermion gas stabilizes at a specific size. This illustrates the principle of "Fermi degeneracy," in which the fermions cannot condense further, due to a law of quantum mechanicsthe Pauli exclusion principlethat keeps identical fermions from occupying the same space at the same time. The same effect stabilizes white dwarf stars against collapse under their own gravitational attraction.

Almost absolute zero: The story of laser cooling and trapping
Speaker: Bill Phillips , National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA When: 06.00PM, Monday 7 Feb 2000 Venue: Bldg 23 (Abel Smith) Lecture thearee Host: Prof. Gerard Milburn Abstract: Contrary to intuition, we can cool down a gas by shining a laser on it. This lecture will describe how laser cooling works, and why it works better than anyone had expected it to. We can now cool a gas of atoms to less than a millionth of a degree above absolute zero - the coldest temperatures in the universe. Atoms this cold exhibit weird and wonderful properties and are being used for applications ranging from super-accurate atomic clocks to new quantum devices like atom lasers. Note: Bill Phillips will be visiting for one week from 5th - 11th Feb. The lecture is an updated version of the Nobel Lecture given in Stockholm on 8 December 1997. It is aimed at a general audience of non-scientists, but discusses some of the newest and most exciting developments in physics. The lecture is presented by the The Physics Department and the Centre for Laser Science of The University of Queensland in conjunction with the Australian Institute of Physics and The Brisbane Institute. The lecture will be chaired by Professor Gerard Milburn. Enquiries to Professor Gerard Milburn, Centre for Laser Science and Department of Physics. Phone (07) 3365 3405, Fax (07) 3365 1242
