About the NRCS Soil Quality Institute
The Soil Quality Institute identifies soil quality research findings and practical technologies that help conserve and improve soil, and enhance farming, ranching, forestry, and gardening enterprises. The Institute works with researchers, conservationists, and land managers to develop these technologies and make them readily available. Our mission: "Cooperate with partners in the development, acquisition and dissemination of soil quality information and technology to help people conserve and sustain our natural resources and the environment." Our vision: “Soil quality as the foundation of a productive nation in harmony with a quality environment” The SQI is under the leadership of the NRCS Soil Survey and Resource Assessment Deputy Area; and is one of 21 Centers, Institutes, and Divisions that form the NRCS

Home Academics Courses Research Extension ... Contacts A nation's level of development can be measured by its ability to produce food and fiber, which relates to their expertise in the area of Crop and Soil Sciences. You are invited to become a member of a profession that has no limits and that society cannot do without. Crop and Soil Sciences is a diverse profession that encompasses all aspects of crop production and soil management. There is a close relationship between crop science and soil science. The goal of the crop scientist is to increase plant production, quality and profit by utilizing genetics, breeding and physiology. The goal of the soil scientist is to improve the soil fertility and the chemical, physical, and microbial characteristics of the soil. These two subjects are combined in Crop and Soil Sciences to develop an integrated approach to the management of crops and soils. Another aspect to Crop and Soil Sciences is turfgrass management. While not directly involved with the production of food or fiber, turfgrass science encompasses many of the same agronomic principles and applies them to the management of grasses for use on golf courses, athletic fields, home lawns, and recreational areas. Turfgrass adds beauty to the landscape, minimizes sound and air pollution, stabilizes the soil, and reduces the heat load on homes through transpirational cooling. Many of the past crop production practices have resulted in environmental problems. The general decline in environmental quality has affected crops as well as the soil. In response to these problems, crop and soil scientists are turning their attention to water pollution, pesticide accumulation in soils, agricultural waste disposal, wind and water erosion and a myriad of other management concerns.

Yet it is and has been abused by us to the point of self destruction. Many past civilizations have perished due to their abuse of the soil (like Mesopotamia and the Mayan civilization). Why didn't anyone stop the destruction? The soil destruction process takes time and the changes in each generation are "small" so no one cared-and most of us still don't. The soil in which we plant crops today has been self perpetuating for millions of years without man's help. It will continue to do so if we do not disturb its natural cycle. In the soil there are nutrients and trace elements both of which plants require for growth. They are essential. Soil moves continually in a natural cycle aided by oxygen, water, minerals and decomposing animal and plant matter. These elements create life in the soil, which is ongoing if not disturbed. We speak of healthy soil if it works well and nutrients continue to be available to the plant. Good soil consists of 93% mineral and 7% bio organic substances. The bio organic parts are 85% humus,10% roots, and 5% edaphon.
